Help - Private Party, Out of State Purchase

I'm in the market for a 2006-2007 CS. I'm considering both dealer and private party cars. In anticipation of a prospective private party purchase I checked with my state DMV (I live in Kansas) on how to go about getting temporary tags prior to the purchase so I can drive the car home. Apparently, they won't issue the temporary tags unless I have the title in hand which obviously is not possible if I'm planning on purchasing out of state and driving the car back. So, short of having the car shipped to my home, do I have other options? Does anyone have experience with this type of transaction?

Get temporary tags from the state in which you are buying it. Go to that states dept of motor vehicles web site. You can usually find the information about temp tags there.

I think there is some grace period, check with your state. Just keep bill-of-sale with you. If you will be transferring existing plates, pick-up and bring the transfer application with you. Carry a copy of the completed application with your bill-of-sale.

I don't know if it works, or is even legal everywhere, but I have even seen cars with a hand-made "In Transit" sign in the window. Having nothing (plate or sign) will definitely get you pulled over. But with a current bill-of-sale and insurance papers, the police will be more concerned about verifing that it isn't stolen or a get-away vehicle (note:P-car would be a bad choice if you are trying to be inconspicuous).

Have the bill of sale and title notarized. Also see if the seller will lend you his plates for the return journey and you can always ship them back.

Re: Help - Private Party, Out of State Purchase

A couple years ago I sold a car to an out of state buyer and he transfered the title after he drove it home, borrowing my tag to do so. Perfectly legal since technically the tile was still in my name until he did his paperwork in his home state. I made sure we had insurance on the car before he left and a week or so later he mailed the tag back to me. Could be your plan as well. Good luck.

Re: Help - Private Party, Out of State Purchase

I buy and sell more cars than I will admit here. Mostly Ga & Fl. Fl requires seller to keep his tag. While not an official policy, most police I've dealt with accepted my tag off my current car ( with proof of ins) as a resonable step, along with a BOS &/or title. I've been stoppped 3 times, twice with my tag, once no tag. All preferred my tag. Your results may differ.
Most states have no temp tag system to help the buyer. You are legal with no tag, but you will be more likely to be stopped. Most states allow 15-30 days to title & tag a car. I rarely get a title from a lein holder in 30 days, so I just pay the late fee. I've received a speeding ticket, a lecture, a thank you (having ins), but never a legal problem for the lack of a tag (or my tag) with proper paperwork ( BOS, title, ins).
I've driven Atlanta to San Francisco in a new car - the temp tag blew off in the
1st 300 mi, and not been stopped. Been stopped 5 mi from my house ( all he wanted was proof of ins).
Hope this helps...there is no one answer. Oh, it helps to not get stopped for speeding....

Some good ideas. Thank you all....seems odd to me that we basically have to bend or brake the rules to make what should be a simple transaction. Having said that, the ideas here are good and will likely help me get there!! THANK YOU

If purchasing from an out of state dealer they will give you a 30 day drive off sticker. When I bought my cayman from a private out of state party I drove without plates for 3 months, got pulled over once and just showed the officer the paper work and said I was waiting for a title. No ticket was issued

Re: Help - Private Party, Out of State Purchase

I bought my '07 from private party out of state. The seller said I should keep his plates until he could get the title. I drove it home with the out of state plates. The seller had to pay of his loan to get the title. It took about 3 weeks waiting on the title so I didn't drive the car much. The seller mailed me the title and got my new plates w/ title. Then mailed the out of state plates back to the seller.

I did get stopped for accelerating on to the highway during the drive home. I think the cop didn't give me a ticket because it was too much trouble.

Bought the car in Reno and since private party had custom plates, he kept them. I basically drove from Reno to Seattle with no plates but with just registration, pink slip, Bill of Sale and signatures. Drove reasonably with traffic and had two overnight stops. Nobody even noticed except to say nice car.

Re: Help - Private Party, Out of State Purchase

    After being a non owner member for 3.5 years, I'm buying a 07 2.7.
I should be leaving Houston this afternoon headed back to the Atlanta area.
I made a tag reading Private Sale. I'll have BoS, Title, ins cards & ins binder.
Should be in Atl area late Tue. Wish me luck.
I plan to use cruise control to help avoid speeding stops....
