Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

I just put on a pair of Nitto Invo 285/35ZR19 tires on my ’05 Boxster S. During normal driving conditions, they seem to be fine. They are rubbing when I take my favorite S turn at high speed. I’ve ordered a pair of 4 mm spacers from Ralph Boothe hoping it will take care of the problem.
My car has been lowered 1 to 1.5 inches with a set of Bilstein PSS9s only. All other suspension parts are OEM. I have OEM 19” Sport Design Wheels with a width of 9.5”. I’m assuming this could be a “bump steer” problem. I haven’t had any problems with 275/35ZR19s and will go back to this size when the 285s wear out.

I haven't had them long enough to notice a MPG difference. I'm assuming the lowereing of my car has something to do with it. Other posters haven't had this problem on a stock suspension. I would think 295 on a 10" would be similar to the 285 on a 9.5". I'm no expert, maybe one of the more knowledgeable members can add to this.

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

The 285/35/19 is slightly taller than the stock 265/35. Are you rubbing on the inside or the outside of the tire (suspension rub vs. fender rub)?

I am getting a set of Invos in 285/30/19 but with aftermarlet wheels on 10" width, with a 33mm offset. Should have them mounted next week.

Inside left rear. I'm assuming the spacers will solve my problem. 285s on a 10" wheel shouldn't bulge out as much as mine on the 9.5. The rub only occurs when I push it hard in the corner. I doesn't happen under normal driving conditions.

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

Now I"m concerned after reading this thread. I have ordered a set of wheels and Nitto's Invos.

245/35/19 on 8.5x19 ET45
285/35/19 on 10x19 ET50

With these offsets I now believe that I will have some rubbing issues. I will have to mount them and determine what size spacer I will need.

IMO, I think it's the combo platter - The 285s on a 9.5" rim is bowing-out the sidewall slightly - 285s fit better on 10" rims. Add to that the lowering and the coil-overs (they're wider than the struts they replace) and you have the rubbing you're experiencing. Your spacers will probably solve the problem.

If you have the stock rear suspension, you might not need the spacers. I believe the extra width of the coil-overs are what's causing the OP's problem.

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

I am with Beez. Small spacers should be fine. My stockers are Carerra S wheels, 9.5's in the back and I run 15mm spacers with PSS9's because I thought the wheesl were too deep in the wells, not because they were rubbing.

If you are rubbing on the inners, spacers are a saver.

I just hope my 19x10 33mm don't stick out too much

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

Thanks Beez for the input. It would really be nice if there was a thread where wheel and tire configurations were posted. A quick post something like this would help a lot of people.

Working Setup
Suspension: Stock
Wheels: F- 19x8.5 et45 R- 19x10 et50
Tires: Nitto Invo F- 245/35 R- 285/35
Spacers: Yes - 5mm

The above info is just an example, but it would be nice if we could have this type of info in one place for all to review. Each setup that worked could be posted and over time this would be a great database for changing wheels.

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

I have a simillar setup and originally had 285/35/19's and under certain conditions they would also rub. I switched to 285/30's and the problem went away completely, it looks better too! I also have sport design wheels. Good luck!!

Re: Getting some rubbing from 285 tires

My CS is lowered with H&R's and I have Nitto Invos mounted with no problems - 245/35/19 front and 285/30/19 rear on the stock 19" sport designs. Try the lower profile 30's on the rear and you should be fine.

And is this setup without spacers?
