TPMS Questions

I have a 2007 model and I bought 2008 17 Inch rims/tires. I knew the 2008 MY sensors was not compatible with the 2007 MY sensors from searching. I expected my TMPS light and red ! light to go off. It did twice but then the car said TMPS Inactive and nothing, that was a good surprise. I never saw a learning or any other similar message.

This leads me to my question, is the reason this happened because the 2008 rims may still have the sensors in them or is this just normal behavior? Also I know the valve stems should be metal when the sensor is installed but did this change for 2008, the ones in these rims are half metal/half rubber. The original owner was clueless to if the sensors were taken off.

Re: TPMS Questions

I can't help you much but I can say that the stems on my '08 18" wheels are either metal or a hard plastic painted in wheel color. There's no rubber evident in them.

Re: TPMS Questions

For 2008 model year, TPMS became a mandatory safety "feature" in the US, so it will display a continuous error if sensors are not present. Prior to 2008, TPMS was an option and therefore I suspect it turns itself off when no sensors are detected.

TPMS uses special valve stems (with sensors connected inside). Stems are normally silver and there is a nut just below the cap that is used to tighten the stems to the wheels.

TPMS became mandatory on 2007 cars - they were optional on MY '06.

To the OP - it sounds like your new wheels don't have sensors in them - as Mr. Brown says, the stems are metal only, so if you have rubber stems, there's probably not sensors in the wheels.

I am confident they are not in there at all, be it pre or post 2008 sensors. I am still not sure why the TPMS light is not on all the time with the red '!'. The area where the pressure used to be displayed in now just '--'. I am okay with this but I expected to have a warning light on so it is better than I thought.

Re: TPMS Questions

I have a MY 2006 with TPMS. My track tires don't have the sensors. The warning light for the missing sensors isn't consistent. Sometimes it comes on right away, other times it takes 5-10 minutes for it to come on and will remain on until the car is off.
