Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
Probably pulling the trigger tomorrow morning, among 3 new leftover '08 cars.
One is cobalt blue/black, with 18s, and dealer would put any 19" wheel I want if I choose that one, so need your opinion and help. The FAQ section does not list Turbo wheel offset and size. Does anybody know?
Choices are:
Carrera S : 8 and 9-1/2", with 57 and 46 offset
Carrera Classic: same as above
Sport Design : same as above
Turbo Wheel : Both not listed on FAQ. Does anybody know??
Carrera Sport : 8 and 10", with 55 and 42. Why different?
My first question is WEIGHT. Can anybody list them from lightest to heaviest?
Second question is which is the best compromise between looks and ease of cleaning for this particular color? The sport designs look elegant, but they're a b*tch to clean, no? The Classic are the simplest, but look incredibly well on this car IMO. Carrera Ss are timeless, and a great choice as well. The Turbo is my favorite Porsche wheel (Carrera S a very close 2nd), but the black on it clashes with the 'aluminum' parts, and doesn't look that great on this color. I personally would leave the Sports out of this car.
My additional concern with the Turbos is I always see them paired with spacers, and don't want to use any. Curious about their offsets and sizes for the Cayman... if anybody knows.
By the way, this car has all performance options (adaptive seats, chrono, PASM, sport wheel, etc) except sport exhaust, but does have the chrome dual tips. Unfortunately, it also has the 'alumimum' package, which I don't like but it's there (rear gills and front fog-light inserts). That might affect choice of wheels, hence why asked for opinions from owners. Many thanks for your comments.

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
|
 |
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
My input only applies to the Carrera S wheels. I have always liked them, there was no other choice for me. Having said that, I will tell you that they are an absolute bear to keep clean.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
Thanks a lot buddy. The Carrera Ss are the best choice for the Cayman overall IMO as well, and I thought they were one of the easiest to clean. Glad you chimed in, but could you elaborate?
The other 2 cars I'm considering (white and atlas gray) have them. I'm between the Classics and Ss on the blue car (which is not my favorite color, but it's well equipped). Keep the comments coming folks. Good day.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
The Carrera S wheels just have a lot of small openings to trap brake dust. The Carrera classics might wind up being the easiest to clean.

The Turbo wheels look the best on any color Cayman .I would go with the Turbo wheels and replace all the Aluminum pieces with CF from motot lux a sponser here on the Planet then the car would look HOT!!
I have seen the Turbo wheels in different offsets but spacers are no big deal if they are required ....Why do you think they put the Turbo whels on the Limited Edition? That car is perfection

Re: Elp_jc
You can get wheel info here: Planet Porsche - FAQ: Cayman Options
The Carrera Sport wheels have slightly different offsets because they are slightly wider. The fronts are 8.5" as opposed to 8", and the rears are 10" as opposed to 9.5".
They are not too hard to clean (you can stick your hand, with a soapy rag, between the spokes to clean the inside), but I believe they are one of the heaviest choices. But man, do they look sweet. I've had lots of comments about mine at Porsche events.

Re: Elp_jc
I have the sport designs for my street tires (use 18" BBS RS-GT for track), and while they look hard to clean, if you get a couple of soft, tapered brushes, and use a good wheel cleaner, they clean up in just a couple of minutes each - they're really no big deal. I also coat them with this stuff called Rejex, and the dust comes almost all the way off with just the wheel cleaner. Good luck.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
Carrera S : 8 and 9-1/2", with 57 and 46 offset Lightest
Carrera Classic: same as above Second lightest
Sport Design : same as above Fourth lightest
Turbo Wheel : Both not listed on FAQ. Does anybody know?? Same as above. Third lightest. No spacers needed if you use the Boxster/Cayman fitment. Highest priced option. Only forged Porsche Factory wheel at this time.
Carrera Sport : 8 and 10", with 55 and 42. Why different? 8.5 and 10" No specific reason except some improved grip and aesthetics. Heaviest, mostly because they are wider.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
Hi ELP JC,
I have Carrera Classics on my CS. Am very happy with the look and are very easy to clean. Plus it is a classic design.

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
I can certainly see why they would be difficult to clean. Lots of small crevices to get at. They do look nice.

Cliff - If your car was only a 2.7 Liter it would be PERFECT!!!!
I have H&R's but now I know for sure I need Spacers after seeing your car

Re: Need your input on OEM 19" wheels
I ended up w/ 19" wheels - and regret it a bit. there is far less choice in tire sizes/brands for 19s. and no choice if you're looking for an all-season tire.
you might check your favorite tire brand for availability in 235/35-19 and 265/35-19. you could get a nasty surprise.
I'll either buy a set of 18s or trade for them when my current tires wear out.

You have a point there ,I put 19"s on my Cayman and there is NO 275/40ZR19tire made by my favorite tire co NITTO I will have to settle for 275/35 or buy another brand and most are Less quility and more Money.
The Turbo wheels look hot though and I would still get them

the stock tire sizes for 19" wheels are as I listed above -
235/35-19, 265/35-19.
18" wheels have 40-aspect tires on them in the same widths.
the (stock) continentals are available, as are PS2. for an all-season tire I had to go w/ PS2 A/S in a 275/35-19. I found nothing in the stock size.
