Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
I've replaced my original Porsche 19" turbine-type wheels with Moda-brand 18"ers from Tirerack. I chose the black-center style; they also have satin-finish-aluminum and chromed versions. All are being cleared out at low...sometimes REALLY low*...prices. Wheels for 2006 Porsche Cayman S With Standard Brakes Standard Model
The centercaps of course contain the wheel brand, and after I couldn't find correct-size Porsche centercaps** for them, I decided to try an inexpensive way. I found some 2-3/4" 'soft'-plastic emblems on eBay for $24... Porsche 2 3/4" Center Cap Wheel Emblems :eBay Motors (item 260421299089 end time Jun-08-09 23:52:02 PDT)
They're self-adhesive and cover all but the outer rim of the Moda centercaps; that I darkened with a Carter's-brand 'Permanent Ink Marker'; we'll see just how permanent that almost-black color is.
I'm quite pleased with the looks of the wheels and tires, altho my 'black' coloring could be blacker, and I'm thinking about dulling the polished-stainless rim edges.
* How does $79 for a new 18X10" wheel sound? They might have some left.
** My original Porsche centercaps fit the Moda wheels.

Sounds like copyright infringement. Porsche wouldn't be too happy I imagine. Suncoast's price was only a $100 more for the real thing.

Putting Porsche decals on a Porsche?
I stuck a little decal on my desktop monitor. Please don't report me, Santa Fe.
I had a BMW wheel cap decal on my Powerbook Titanium to hide the Apple logo while on campus at Microsoft.
Would that qualify as terrorism?

Some have ethics and some do not. These are not Porsche decals they are images stolen from Porsche...sort of like boat seats....or any other possessions you are your employers own.

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
Sorry you said $79 which I thought was your price.
But even if it where five times more you have to deal with the copyright issue.
Most of us have income derived from copyright protected entities and respect those of others.

If they are not licensed Porsche decals, then I stand corrected.
I have purchased some that look identical from Niello Porsche. You have a keener eye for counterfeits than I do, apparently.
I will assume your statement mean's that you are unethical.

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
So I was going to get this for my winter set but think I will pass looking for 16' or 17' wheels. The price is really cheap! Can you find some cheap tires too

They look good to me, but then again I've never been described as ethical either.

Do you think 16- or 17-foot wheels will fit on your Cayman?

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
Well...THIS certainly turned into an interesting thread.
To clarify:
1. The black-center Moda wheels are $159 and $79 instead of $244 and $259, front and rear, and TR may not have any fronts left. I was going to buy one side-pair of spares, but the $79 price convinced me to get all 4.
2. I believe they have some of the satin-finish and chrome (ugh!) wheels left; you might call Brandon at 800/428-8355, 3, 287 and ask.
3. The perhaps-copyright-violating 'Porsche' emblems were only $24 delivered, the results look quite good, and I'm thrilled with my inexpensive tire-and-wheel package. But I think I'll still use something--a wire brush?--to dull that shiny rim edge.
I LOVE my Cayman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
jeffreybehr, thanks for posting... you inspired my hubby to get these wheels (and some kickass sticky tires) for me for Christmas! They were just delivered today and we've got the front two on - they look Phat! So much better than the stock wheels I had (which came curb-mangled compliments of the original owner).
Thanks again!

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
Pix of the Moda MD1's in 19" I installed today on Hot Croc's car. With the ebay Porsche emblems covering the Moda logo.
Tires are Bridgestone RE11's for some good grip. Great look and grip for a cheap price. Nice.
Cheers,
Skottoman

Re: Poor man's 'Porsche' wheel centercaps
My winter wheels came without canter caps of any kind so I ordered some 'Porsche' ones from eBay. They haven't arrived yet though. I like your method as well.
