Are TPMs necessary on winter setup?

Just curious about whether I need to spend the extra 400 for TPM... Does it HAVE to be hooked up? I can't think of a reason why I'd NEED TPMs on winter tires...especially since I wouldn't be getting run-flats.

Re: Are TPMs necessary on winter setup?

First if you don't hook it up you will have to ignore the warning messages.
Two, it is a warning device to let you be aware of tire pressure loss and under inflated tires in very near real time (fractions of a second). That information is just as useful in the winter as it is in the summer. TPMS has nothing to do with run flats which are not available on a Cayman.

Re: Are TPMs necessary on winter setup?

Thanks, Santa Fe...

I realize that run flats aren't available...and if they were, I wouldn't want em! But TPMs in general are super-important with RF tires...as there's no visual way to tell if you've got a flat.

Maybe I'm underestimating the value of TPM on my Porsche for street use. On a track, I agree that constant monitoring is useful because even tiny fluctuations affect performance. On the street, especially with low-performance winter tires, maybe not so much.

Please feel free to correct my thinking....I value your opinion....

Re: Are TPMs necessary on winter setup?

Personally, the error message alone is enough for me to get TPMS... I couldn't stand that for months in the winter... annoys me when I take my wheels off and have it for 10 minutes...

I feel that it is very good to have for street use due to the real time measurements that can alert you to a situation where continued driving could damage expensive tires and wheels or even cause an accident. At low speeds low profile tires don't give much of a feedback warning before you are on the rims.
