Tire Pressure & Heat

I live in South Florida...........when I leave for work in the early morning my Tire Pressure Monitoring System reads all four tires within a pound of the recommended pressures............coming home in the heat of the day the pressures on all four tires are elevated + 3 > +5 pounds above the recommended pressures.

Do I let this make me crazy or do I ignore the computer system and continue to check the tires regularly with my Accutire Gauge and not worry about this unles there is a marked drop in the pressures?

Re: Tire Pressure & Heat

The tires will heat up normally due to the flexing of the rubber as you roll down the road. The higher the outside temps, the more they'll heat up (to a point).

Of course with our hot engines right next to the rear tires, those will heat up even more. If you cold morning temps are in the recommended range (confirm with a pressure gauge) then I don't think you need to worry about anything.

Re: Tire Pressure & Heat

I've also noticed that the pronounced pressure increases don't occur in the rain, as the water dissipates the heat.

Re: Tire Pressure & Heat

It's normal. No need to be alarmed. In fact, I use this when it's cold out to help me determine when my tires are up to temp.

Re: Tire Pressure & Heat

Don't forget radiant heat from the sun. Usually one side of the car is in the sun and the other in the shade. This could make a difference of 1-2 psi side-to-side.

Re: Tire Pressure & Heat

The tire pressure numbers that the factory recommends, takes this additional increase from driving into account. That's why they say to set the pressures when the tires are cold.
