What do you drive on in freezing or below temps?

I did a poll on who drove in snow areas a little while ago. It turns out about a third store the car, a third just drive on dry roads, and a third drive on the snow. I assume the people who drive on the snow are using winter or all season tires.

I am curious about the ones driving on dry roads only in below freezing temps. What type of tires do you drive with?

When it's freezing or below temps out there, I drive on summer tires on my lovely warm and dry California roads :-)

I am moving this to Porsche Tires and Wheels due to the fact that this has more to do with tires rather than Boxsters and Caymans in general.

    Thanks

Cayman is put away but the RAV4 comes out with studded Nokian Hakapellita's. Locking AWD when I need it with good grip in snow or ice. Ice is the bigger issue where I live, with or without snow.

If I drive the CS in below freezing temps I can really notice a degradation in grip. Have been at an autocross starting at 2C and then warming up to about 10C late in the fall. Grip improves considerably as the day warmed.

Re: What do you drive on in freezing or below temps?

I drive the Cayman in the winter when I can, but I have a Honda Civic as a winter car for when there is snow on the road. With the alternative available, it just isn't worthwhile to get winter tiresicon for the Cayman. On the other hand - I'm not willing to just put it away and wait for summer either.

Re: What do you drive on in freezing or below temps?

I won't say I drive when it's freezing or below. But down to about 40F, I'm out on my summer tires. It was just too sad to leave it under a cover all winter long.

I'm just careful and keep both my speed and enthusiasm in check.

No real ice out snow where i live. It gets below freezing some mornings and late nights but I'm still running Hankook V12's. When things get really bad i just drive my corolla.

Re: What do you drive on in freezing or below temps?

I don't drive the Boxter in ice or snow- but below freezing just means not driving likes its warmer, because handling is degraded some. Contrary to legend, summer tired cars do not spin at every corner, break in half over speed bumps, or loose value. I mean its not like not having N rated tires, where you risk your life just sitting in the car, right?

Re: What do you drive on in freezing or below temps?

winter tiresicon have better compound for cold temps. They just stick a lot better, even on dry roads. They also ride a little nicer. I love 'em.

I've had some bad experiences with summer tires out on winter "circulation drives". One time, I was making a left turn through a yellow light and the back end of my '89 M3 just came around on me. There was not a lot of room to spare. After avoiding an accident, I got pulled over. Luckily, someone robbed a bank or something because the cop got another call and told me to be careful. He couldn't believe I wasn't 18 years old. He took one look at my Yoko A008s and said "Those are autobahn tires, what do you mean you lost grip?" I didn't know about this compound stuff either and couldn't explain it...just knew that I wasn't going fast enough for something like that to happen. Temp was in the teens. Manhole covers were steaming. One of those dry, cold days in Chicago suburbs.

Summer tires are the worst in snow, but they're also pretty bad in cold temps. on dry pavement. Low profile summers can be dangerous in below zero cold. They can actually tear if you hit the wrong pothole or rock. Don't even try it. At 30 or 40, they're OK on dry roads but don't push too much unless you're really ready to catch it.

I believe it's better for a car to get a good run a couple times each month than to sit all winter. I always warm it up with gentle use, run the A/C to get that lubricant oil moving as well. When it's all warmed up, I'll give it the spurs on the right road. Get it completely warm, oil, block and all...takes about 30 minutes...or don't bother...just leave it in the garage. Short trips in the cold aren't doing it any favors.
