For a very scenic and challenging road New Mexico 4 cannot be beat. It is an easy half day trip from Santa Fe and is also a longer and prettier alternative to the freeway when driving from Albuquerque to Los Alamos or Santa Fe. The village of Jemez Springs has places to eat and a few art stores. You pass though several national forests where picnic spots are available and if you pause long enough to take a few hikes the scenery is breathtaking. The roads are very twisty and the temptation to hurry is great but there are elk and deer about so keep a sharp eye out. Should time permit the Bandelier National Monument is a must. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandeli...ional_Monument
