Nice website for CA driving routes

Hi All,

I wanted to take my 3 month old CS on a nice drive in Southern California,
Hadn't driven in the mountains in a while, so i started searching for information on the web for nearby driving routes and found a pretty good website for autos and motorcycles and wanted to pass it along.

LateralG - Southern California's premier source for sports car and motorcycle roads, tips, and info

breaks up routes in CA into different regions, and then breaks up specific roads by fun factor, difficulty, traffic, and road quality. also show's nice maps of the route.

Ended up driving up the angeles crest hwy and had a great time.

Cheers,

Joe

Re: Nice website for CA driving routes

either go up north from LA or go down south from SF.

my recommendation would be (from LA):

- get on PCH at the end of 10 freeway at Santa Monica, go north.
- stop by Pepperdine, my alma mater
- stop by Zuma Beach (right after you pass Kanan Road), check out the beach, turn around just a bit.
- go north on Kanan, enjoy the winding road bit, jump on 101N at Agoura Hills
- connect back to HWY 1 at San Luis Obispo, go towards Hearst Castle
- do the coast drive
- connect to 17N at santa cruz - enjoy the winding road, connect back to the 101.

or you can keep going on HWY1 to your heart's desire, but by this point i've just about had enough beach. a stop over monterey and do the aquarium is a good idea as well.

i used to the above trip 2 ~ 3 times a year growing up in LA

Unfortunately Pashnit's a pay site, but they and I agree that Little Penoche/Penoche Rd. is a GREAT trip. See http://www.planetporsche.net/u-s-wes...ay-gilroy.html for details. I'll be on it twice in my '06CS the weekend of the Historics at Laguna Seca.

...And I was indeed on Little Penoche Rd. twice this weekend.

Spent the WE at the 36th Monterey Historics races. What GREAT fun! Saw more 917s, 956s, and 962s RACING around Laguna Seca than I knew existed.

Little Penoche Rd. was a little rougher than I remembered, and going west/south Friday, I quit at 125MPH. However, Sunday was different. I guess I felt more comfortable, because going east/north felt so good, I turned around to do it again. Unfortunately, a couple vehicles appeared in the distance behind us so I slowed, pulled all the way around the corner, and waited for them. After they left, my friend and I achieved a new personal speed record of 157MPH (actual and corrected with GPS; that was 162MPH on the speedometer) north/eastbound. The southern end, about 2 miles, of the 3-mile straight stretch is good enough to attempt that; the car was still accelerating, slightly uphill, when I lifted.
