LA driving roads

Can any of you SoCal guys tell me what roads are must drive roads in the LA area for some spirited driving? And does anyone know if any part of the Crest is open? Just trying to do a little planning before a trip out there.
Thanks.

Re: LA driving roads

The Santa Monica Mountains, especially Decker Canyon Rd. , Encinal Canyon Rd. and the most hellish of all, Latigo Canyon from PCH to Kanan. (Don't look over the edge). Mullholland from Las Virgenes to Kanan is also a very windy but extremely scenic stretch. As always, watch out for the CHP. My favorite is PCH North through Malibu exit Los Posas then take Portrero Road all the way through Hidden Valley to Westlake Blvd. From there take a right which turns into Decker Canyon. That whole area is one huge fun zone for the sports car driver. Check the map and you will see how it would make sense.

+1 on Mulholland, Las Virgines/Malibu Cyn, PCH west of Malibu etc.

To jog my LA memories (when I had a Mustang 5.0 convertible), if I wanted to avoid traffic, I'd take a Sunday morning jaunt.....from my Glendale days, La Tuna Cyn from 210 toward Burbank was always a nice winding drive, and for a real long drive, Angeles Crest Highway.

From my Orange County days, PCH in the south county had its nice spots, but traveling there more recently, I see it as basically a 4-lane route, pretty but not a sports car road. Ortega Hwy (Rt 74) is the more traditional (but congested) sports car road. OC has gotten so built up since the 90's that my expertise about that area is hopelessly obsolete.

Re: LA driving roads

Thanks for the quick replies. This gives me plenty of things to look into. A couple of you mentioned Angeles Crest Hwy. Can anyone confirm its condition from the 210 junction following Hwy 2 (Angeles Crest Hwy) east to the 138 junction and then to 15? Is this open? Heard something about it being closed due to damage from fires. Thanks again.

Re: LA driving roads

jhuang has reported that he drove the Angeles all the way to the 14. According to CalTrans, Hwy 2, the Angeles Crest, is closed from the edge of La Canada to Red Box Ranger Station, so I'm not sure what route he took. But on Sunday, we drove from the I-15 end all the way to Red Box. Some fallen rocks on the road, but otherwise beautiful. Some snow left along the road, lots of flowers blooming, and the yucca are going nuts!

Re: LA driving roads

Mulholland from Topanga to Stunt Road. Stunt to Piuma. Piuma to Las Virgenes. Las Virgenes to...anywhere.

If you want the be all and end all, you must drive Highway 33 from Ojai to Gorman. It is simply the best road I've driven in Socal and I've lived here my whole life.
