Has anybody taken their CS to Baja Cal.? I'm planning on going to Rosarita in April and am alittle concerned about my car,(i.e. theft, etc.)

I have driven a lot in Baja California, always in pickups. The road to Rosarita is quite good, but the city streets, driveways, etc. are not always in good repair. Aside from the potential for theft, or other careless drivers, I think the CS is ill-suited for Baja travel.

I would leave it tucked-in in my garage.

Would not advise to do it. Live about two hours from OLD mexico and relunctant to take my Cayman to El Paso because of the theft rate. In fact the closer you are to Mexico the higher the insurance. Thus, pay more in the Ruidoso area than I would in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, per USAA insurance rules. I love Mexico and the people are wonderful, but not a place for a Cayman. l

Does your insurance cover you in the Frontier?
I grew up in Socal and moved to Jersey in 89' so maybe things have changed since we had to smuggle Corona into the states.

By the way I won't take my Porsche's into Newark or Manhattan for that matter.

It is possible that your US insurance will cover your own car in Mexico, BUT YOUR LIABILITY INSURANCE WILL NOT! You must buy a Mexican liability policy for the time you are there. If you are involved in an accident, regardless who may eventually be found at fault, without Mexican insurance you are in the slammer. Such insurance is readily available from the AAA or from agents located near the border. It is fairly inexpensive and absolutely necessary.

ok...been to rosarito many times...and the nicest car i've taken there was a sc430. parked it under ground with 2 guards watching it. came back and everything was just fine.

the city roads there...um....not so great.....the carne asadas...awesome....the foam fest.......wild

i personally like to drive across the border...cause once i walked and took a taxi and it was horrible walking back into cali buzzed. i guess they see drunk ppl everday and they really don't have the tolerance for them.


i would drive a beater there so you can actually enjoy the partying, drinking, wild girls, scenary, horseback riding and the food without constantly worrying about your car in the back of your mind.

but if you do decide to go...watch out not only for theft but for dirty cops too.

*story: once my friends drove there in two cars, they were on the road. they saw two cops and even made eye contact and then asked them if it was ok to make a turn there, and the cops looked them straight in the eye and said yes, as soon as they completed the turn, the cops stopped them and demanded money.*

The frontier? We love it here in NEW Mexico!!! Understand that most large insurance companies cover up to 30 miles into the interior of Mexico, but after that you need Mexican insurance. Always a good idea to buy it anytime you cross with an auto. Also, understand that you must now sign papers that certify the car will not be sold. Cars taken across, 1972 International and a 92 Ford 4x4. Just a little observation: if one can't walk back across buzzed then it is better to drive?

My clear understanding is that Mexico will not recognize foreign auto insurance at all, because they have no way to drag the insurance company into court.
