This article discusses the installation of the larger oil cooler from 996 into my 2007 2.7L Cayman. The larger cooler will give me a little extra oil cooling here in sunny FL where we have summer temps in the mid 90's. The 996 part is taller as shown here on the left and will interfere with the stock plenum. I have an SRP installed previously which has plenty of clearance. The Porsche part number is 996 107 025 57. By purchasing the Behr ( OEM manufacturer ) part number 376726111 I saved about $80. I paid $165 for the oil cooler. . New O rings were used for the installation and you will need two each of P/Ns 999 707 389 40 and 999 707 409 40. .
The first step is to open up the engine compartment, release the coolant cap and then drain a few gallons of coolant into a catch pan. Remove the small coolant hose from the oil cooler and prop it out the way. You then remove the four T-40 torx bolts that hold the cooler to the block. The forward left hand bolt is tight to the wiring harness which you can pry outward to get the socket on the bolt. I used my grabber to extract the bolts. On the advice of some blog posts I read, slip a plastic bag under the cooler to collect any oil left in the cooler. It didn't help totally and I had to clean up the block. One note of caution: this installation was made easier/possible because of the way I routed the cylinder number 4 vent hose to the 987 Motorsport AOS to clear my Softronics Racing Plenum. If you have a stock setup you'll need to check the routing of this hose to ensure you have clearance for the taller oil cooler. YMMV. After tightening down the four oil cooler bolts I added a piece of coolant hose to the vent hose that now touches the taller oil cooler. Reconnect the small coolant hose to the oil cooler using a fresh clamp. Here is a photo of the installed 996 oil cooler.  Refill and bleed the cooling system using the method of your choice, start the car and check for leaks.

Thanks for sharing this mod. I assume if you did it during an oil change, that would minimize the spillage during the swap? Do foresee any fitment issue if one has a SRP with the stock VOS set-up? Did you happen to take any pics of the underside of the coolers?
