Re: Alcon Full Brake Upgrade

Tess,

What is the weight gain/loss with each? Do they directly mount where the existing ones mounted? In other words can you unbolt the caliper and take off the rotor and do a direct swap or is it more involved than that? What pads are used?

Weight: I will weigh all the standard stuff as I fit the kit, so will let you know, but would suggest because the diameter is up from 320mm to 365mm combined with thickness increasing from 28mm to 32mm that the Alcon's will be heavier, but as stated will confirm. (Also see Question and Answers in the original Post as this has weights of rotors etc.) here: http://www.planetporsche.net/site-ve...buy-offer.html

Fitting will just be removal of standard Caliper and rotor, fit new Caliper Bracket, fit new rotor, fit new caliper, bleed up, and drive to bed in !!
The Pads included are Ferodo DS Performance friction, which I am happy to try, but I will have a set of Pagid Blues or even Yellows about me just in case !!

I’m impressed with the overall kit and the way it’s boxed and packaged. Also the price, It would cost me more in the UK to get just Front Brembo’s than the whole Alcon kit FRONT & REAR has cost ME!!! (and with the Brembo's you’ve also got to change the master cylinder to a 997 GT3 one !)
This kit has been made specifically for the Cayman/Boxster platform and Alcon have taken into account the sizes of all Standard cylinders as well as amounts of fluids in the standard system combined with the balance required front to rear. So it's a Kit made just for our car rather than a set of oversize rotors and Calipers, that will fit all cars, with a adaption bracket!!

NOTE: On Bottom corner of box with Part No and Specific Application i.e PORSCHE CAYMAN

Can you take a pic of the top of the caliper? How hard is it to change pads? Same as stock or different?

Re: Alcon Full Brake Upgrade

Pad Change is Very Easy, but needs Caliper removal. (2 bolts only)

With Pads Fitted

Pad removed (To Remove: Push against spring and slide out over pins)

Mounting bracket for rear (Bracket bolts in place with existing caliper bolts,
then Caliper mounts to bracket with bolts provided)

Re: Alcon Full Brake Upgrade

Thanks for the clarifications, looks like a nice system even if it does require caliper removal for brake pad swapping. I assume the pads are the same size as stock or are the pads they included larger?

Re: Alcon Full Brake Upgrade

Pads are bigger than stock and are for the caliper. Good news is they are the same front and rear, so you only need have one extra set. They recon that the way that they've sized the pistons that it will work perfect......(BTW you wont warp these babies, not at 32mm thick !!) They look the same or similar to the rotors we use on a Subaru WRC's

Re: Alcon Full Brake Upgrade

Well here they are fitted...

Front:

Rear:

First Impressions (after bedding in) Well they certainly feel very very powerful, but I intend to drive them for about 400 miles then bleed the whole system. Then we will see what they will do on track !!...so far, I think they perform brilliant and look so good as well.

Do those Ferodo pads take the wear sensors?

To be honest Nick, I didn't look. But I would think not, as although the Calipers and the Kit is made specifically for the Cayman/Boxster Platform, The Pads will be Generic, and therefore fit many things.....but for sure I'll look, maybe tonight, as I need to take some photo's showing Standard 18" wheels.

It takes me about 25 minutes total to swap pads on my front Alcons on my TT, including the time to jack up the car and remove the wheels. The two bolts take 70 ft. lbs. of torque, so they come off easily.

I would highly recommend this brake kit - i've run Alcons on my TT now for two complete track seasons and they are outstanding.

Mark, It's taken 12 months to get them to agree to make a specfic kit for the Cayman/Boxster platform rather than adapting one of their existing kits. So I can never be blamed for wasting time. If you'd like to have a look I'll be in the car tomorrow as I'm nipping up to Porsch-Apart to have a steering wheel fitted. Well it'll stop me from setting the airbag off !!!

The Ferodo Pads Do NOT have cut-outs for the sensors, but I have been told that some of the other manufactures do. So like the Standard Pads for the Standard Calliper...some friction manufactures do and some don't. (Most with any sort of track orientation tend not to bother)

Weights:
New Calliper front and rear – 4.12kg ea (inc pads)
Disc and bell assy front – 9.46kg
Disc and bell assy rear – TBC; cast iron bell for drum in hat (forgot to do this one)
Disc only front – 8.20kg
Disc only rear – 6.70kg
Driving the car I can't feel any difference in weight
