Measuring oil level

I know the car checks the oil each time I am about to start the car. Most of the time it says 6 seconds. Sometimes, it's 3-4 minutes. This usually occurs after I have stopped the car less than five minutes and want to restart. That is a slight nuisance but I'm willing to wait 4 minutes, as I have gathered that I should not interrupt the process and start the car (I think that's what the manual said). But today, it said 20 minutes! I had just stopped the car to put air in my tires and when I was about to start it it wanted to measure the oil level but take 20 minutes. I couldn't wait there for 20 minutes so I played around with the computer and think I cancelled it. Any thoughts on what I should do next time?

Why is the car checking the oil every time you start? Unless you specifically want to check the oil, turn the key all the way so that the engine starts.

If you stop the key before the engine kicks over, it go into the oil check mode and if you have just stopped the engine, yes it will take a long time to check.

Even if you get into the oil check mode accidentally, just keep turning the key to start the engine. You're not going to hurt anything by canceling the check.

Now if you start the engine and it's still checking the oil level, something else is going on, unless you have a GT3 or twin turbo engine in the car (those require the engine to be running to check the oil level).

I just acquired the car so I just assumed it automatically checked the oil level before starting the car. It does it automatically. I do not initiate it. Maybe I or the previous owner set it to check the oil every time? If so, how would I turn this function off?

As Pistol Pete suggested, it sounds like you are just pausing at the ON position when you turn the key, long enough to see the Checking Oil message - this will happen anytime you turn the key to the ON position. If you just turn the key all the way to START the engine, it will start without checking the level, or if it starts checking the level, but you don't want to wait the time it indicates, then you can go ahead and start the engine - you won't be hurting anything.
