Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum but as a new future Cayman owner, the thought of speed bumps has given me some worry. We stay in the Boston area during the summer and I've noticed this trend towards building these speed humps(?) at certain intersections. You have to drive slow around here anyways but if you were not and you didn't see one of these humps, you could go airborne.
I live in AZ and that is where my '14 Cayman will also live. They love speed bumps there also so these obstructions have been more of a concern knowing how low the Cayman is. I'll have PASM which will lower the car another 10mm.
Are you folks with Caymans able to clear these bumps without scraping? I know of at least one that scrapes the bottom of my Audi if I don't crawl over it.
I know speed bumps look different in different countries, but over here I haven't had any problem with them. My Boxster S has PASM, so it's lowered 10 mm.
Unlike many other sport cars, there is no low front spoiler lip on a 981. Unless the speed bump is extremely steep, it should not be any problem. The lowest point on a 981 is immediately in front of the front wheel.
The only problem I encounter is driving up a high curb. Like the one I need to negotiate to drive into the garage at work... I have to back up, turn the car around on the sidewalk and then drive forward into the garage. To my co-workers great amusement!
20mm lower than a stock 987 here; be prepared to crawl over the larger speed bumps at ~5mph whilst driving at an angle. There are some roads I won't drive down just to spare my poor brake ducts.
I have PASM and did EDP on my Cayman. In some of the small villages we drove through in the Alsace region I had to negotiate speed bumps. The first one I didn't angle the car going into it and did get a slight scrape sound, obviously the rest of them I always angled the car going into the bump. Other low to the ground cars were doing the same thing. Since the intent of bumps is to slow people down, not a big deal to just angle the car a bit also. BTW, when picking up in Europe, the only break-in I was told to adhere to was vary the RPMs which I did. And I did exceed 4,000 RPMs a lot while on entering and while on the Autobahn.
I have the sport suspension and I've had mine for over a month, it's my daily driver. So far I am surprised that I have not scrapped as much as I thought I would. I do negotiate every bump and steep drive way at an angle. There have been many times I was sure I was going to scrape the front lip or the belly, but nope. PASM would obviously be less prone to scrapping that the SS, so as long as you are mindful, I think you'll be surprised with the lack of scrapping.
