Window Tint Recommendation

those of you who have gotten your windows tinted, do you have a recommendation on the type of tint, the brand, the amount of light transmission, and installer in the 968** zip code area?

as Hawaii law requires "sun screening devices" (i.e. window tint) to transmit at least 35% of the light, i guess thats the darkest i can legally go. however, i was thinking that a lighter tint would have a better appearance and should have a lesser impact on the self-dimming mirrors.

also, other threads have indicated that ceramic tints don't affect the radio reception as the metallic types do. Some of the brands that have been mentioned on those threads are Solar Gard, Llumar, Huber Optik, Madico, and Formula One. is one considered "better" than the others?

how about installers. a friend of mine is a high school classmate of the owner of T&T Tinting Specialists and indicated that they do good work (they also carry Formula One tints).

anyway, i would appreciate any recommendations that you can offer.

I'm not sure where you can get tint done where you live, but I would recommend Huber Optik tint. They offer it on 35% (this is what I have on my car) and it really works well keeping the heat out. Not to mention it really looks sharp.

808 croc, aloha!

After pricing everybody, I went with Midnight Tinting. They have solar guard, lifetime warranty, and the best price, and they were nice guys. Actually, I think the price was about $100 less than everybody else.
I know, I checked everywhere.
I haven't had problems with cell phone use at all.

PS tell them the guy with the red porsche sent you!

poser (and aflau, as you indicated you have 35%), does your tint affect your night vision/driving? i'm attempting to determine how dark to go. believe it or not, although i've lived in hawaii all my life, i've never tinted any of my cars...don't know how dark tints impact night/low lighting conditions. without any experience, i'm inclined not to go too dark...perhaps 50%, or is that too light?

tommy if you have any suggestions please feel free to chime in.

808croc:

I have not been bothered by the tint at night and also, as predicted, have not had any problems with cell phone reception. I think the tint makes the car look shaper and definitely greatly reduces the cabin heat gain making the AC work less. You park your cayman outdoors at work so minimizing UV at least through the side and rear windows would really help preserve the interior. Go for it....

99.9% of our clients select the 35% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) as it provides the best heat rejection and is legal in Hawaii. No one has ever complained about it being too dark at night . . (too light during the day maybe for some, but never too dark) . . . we've experienced that only people with night blindness, or are getting up there on the elderly chart select the 50% for the UV protection and some heat rejection.

When you come down, we can show you all of the films, and even mount it right on the glass so you get a true idea of the results. hard to test the nighttime thing though . . . I hope this helps . . .

thanks poser...that appears to be the consensus...that 50% would be too light and 35% is not too dark.

Windshield tints

i recently received an email from the shop that did my window tinting indicating that they have the new, clear, and legal heat blocking windshield film by Llumar that is supposed to reduce heat by 43% and uv by 99.9%. the product is call "Air Blue". has anyone got this done or heard about it?

supposedly, the film will transmit about 80% of visible light. although i haven't independently verified this, i've been informed that the federal motor vehicle safety standard (FMVSS) 205 allows sun screening devices on the windshield provided it transmits at least 70% of the light. as the Air Blue film transmits 80%, it is allowed under FMVSS 205.

however, hawaii law (section. 291-21.5, hawaii revised statutes) has stricter standards than federal regulations as hawaii law prohibits sun screening devices unless it is specifically exempted from the law. section 291-21.5(d)(6) exempts sun screening film that is applied along the top edge of the windshield so long as the material does not encroach upon the AS-1 portion of the windshield, or no lower than 4 inches below the top of the windshield if no AS-1 markings can be found.

consequently, i'm not so sure that using the Air Blue film on the windshield is legal in hawaii, even if it may be legal in other states because it is not exempted from the prohibition contained in section 291-21.5, HRS.

Hi Garrett,

T&T was doing a discounted install for PCA-HI members:

To: kekumu@hawaii.rr.com

Subject: Porsche Club Special - AIR Blue Windshield tinting

Aloha Ray,

Mahalo for visiting our booth at the First Hawaiian Auto Show as well as for your call today.

T&T Tinting is the first glass tinting company to bring "AIR Blue Windshield Heat Blocker" to Hawaii! (click link for more info on this revolutuionary new product).

Because of our past relationship with the Porsche Club of Hawaii, we want to offer a special bulk-rate discount for all Porsche of Hawaii club members for our newest product AIR Blue.

Our regular price for this product installed on a windshield is $225.00. T&T will be offering the Porsche Club members a bulk-rate discount of $165 per windshield providing 5 or more members schedule at the same time.

We will require that each windshield pass a screening to ensure that the combination of the AIR Blue and your windshield meets or exceeds the Federal guidelines (FMVSS-205) that require that vehicle windshields be at least 70% VLT or lighter. Any vehicle metering 69% or lower will not be able to be done.

Please let me know how we can be of assistance to coordinate the appointments. Let me know if you need any samples, brochures, etc. for your next general meeting.

Mahalo,
Tommy \-000-/
Tommy Silva, President / CEO - T&T Tinting Specialists, Inc.

I don't know if they are still offering the install at $165, but won't hurt to ask. I was considering it, but couldn't determine from the others who had it done whether the windshield tint had a blue color. If so, I'm not interested because I don't think it would look too hot and definitely clash with the tint I already have on my CS.

alan,

my concern is that although the Air Blue film may be permitted under federal regulations, my initial read of hawaii law indicates that it would violate section 291-21.5, hawaii revised statutes. admittedly, i'm not a lawyer, but hawaii law appears to prohibit any sun screening device to be applied on the windshield below the AS-1 mark. if there is no AS-1 mark, then any film applied below 4 inches from the top of the windshield would appear to violate hawaii law.
