recommend a first DE

Hi all, I first posted this in the caymanregister so I'm re-posting it here:

I was planning on trying out a DE event. I'm ordering fire extinguisher, mount and helmet and I've sent out my PCA application.

I'm looking at events in Watkins Glen, Poconos and Summit Point. Which is better for a newbie? I'm coming from NYC.

Cheers!

Re: recommend a first DE

Don't forget Lime Rock too!

As a noob myself here are my thoughts

Pocono - nice wide open track. Nothing really to hit unless you really mess up. Kinda short (unless you run the full course) and the track is a bit bumpy.

Lime Rock - some real fast turns and constant action, a real roller coaster. Mainly a 3rd gear track for the beginner.

Watkins Glen - very large track compared to the other two. Real potential to hit some high speeds on the straights if that's your thing. The armco is an arms length away in some sections so any minor wiggle can become major quickly. My favorite of the local area tracks.

Re: recommend a first DE

Thanks. It's poconos then lime-rock as backup. The other two are quite a drive from the city. Watkins Glen sounds like a great venue for a more experienced noob. I'm really excited :P

You're welcome. Come on out to some of our local events, you'll meet a lot of other local track junkies that can give you much better advice.

Thunderbolt is AWESOME. That's where I did my first DE weekend with my Cayman. It's a relatively flat track with a nice mix of technical and easy sections. Great facilities (CDOC has a store at the track).

Lighting looks like an equally great track, although I haven't yet driven it. Plus, there's a karting track there as well.

Re: recommend a first DE

Pocono is a great first DE. The track is short & you see each turn many times, so you can get the line down pretty well. Not much to hit. Lime Rock is a short but fast track much more interesting and challenging. WGI is a fantastic track, fast and lots of armco to hit! lol Tbolt a great facility but I hated the sand & dust, hope it's better this year.

I have a used fire extinguisher mount for stock seats for sale.

Re: recommend a first DE

hi diverdog,

What kind of mount is it?

I have powerseats and would like something that I can install and take off without taking the seats out. Something like the speedtactics bracket.

Re: recommend a first DE

Shaggy. Check with your Region as many don't require Fire Ex for Green cars. Also, I'm a bit worried about the Speed Tactics mount you like. It goes under the main bolts for the seat. That means you're not able to drive the bolts as deeply as Porsche intended. The Brey Kraus and other makes all require the tedious process of removing seat and mounting under its frame. Your choice but safety is key. Call Stable Energies (Garfield NJ) for an opinion.

ah!! a Metro NY Region PCA Newbie!!!
Welcome to the family..

This is what I recommend... If you have never driven on a track, try Autocross first - May 24th Nassau Coliseum.. great way to get comfortable making quick manuvers around a course... you need all your senses working 100% efficiently at the Track.. Autocross will help you develop that.. "Mistakes at Autocross are funny... Mistakes on the Track are Expensive!!" Learn how to recover from a spin at Autocross.. not the track... Very competitive crowd at Nassau.. you will love it and the same group does DE together.. Several of our DE instructors and Club Racers do Autocross on a regular basis...Next DE for Metro is Watkins Glen on May27/28. Worth the drive.. You will have an incredible instructor in the car with you at all time, so dont worry about hitting anything unless you are not following instructions. GO!

If you can't do Watkins, try one of these from the Metro NY Calendar or send me a PM:

May 24: Autocross, Nassau Coliseum
May 27, 28: DE, Watkins Glen
May 29 - 31: Zone 1 Watkins Glen Club Race
May 31: Porsche on View Concours, *Rain date*

June 7: Autocross School, Nassau Coliseum
June 13: Clam Bake Rally
June 19 - 21: Zone 1 48 Hrs DE, Watkins Glen, NY
June 22, 23: DE, Summit Point
June 28: Autocross, Nassau Coliseum

July 3: DE, Pocono, Full course
July 11: Vintage Rally
July 13: DE, Lightning, Millville, NJ
July 17,18: ALMS, Lime Rock Park, Lakeville CT
July 26: Autocross, Nassau Coliseum

Promise, you will never go home dissapointed!

Re: recommend a first DE

Exactly the bracket I have for sale. No issue with the mounting bolts they are longer than the threaded inserts they bolt into. The bracket tabs are not very thick. I had to change it out when I changed to Sparco track seats. $40 + shipping.

You may not need it depending on what org you are participating with. NNJR-PCA doesn't require it until the white (solo) group. I decided to get one after my first event.

Re: recommend a first DE

It's a slippery slope! lol I ended up with track seats because I wanted a HANS! Don't think about modifing your car yet. A stock Cayman is a hell of a car and way more capable than a begining driver can use. Get some track time & talk to the other Cayman folks at the track to see what works & what is a waste of time & money before you change anything.

Hope to see you at the track. I'll be at Tbolt 5/18-19 & WGI for zone 1 6/20-21

Many PCA orgs use these web sites to register for events MotorsportReg.com : Online registration management tools for driving and social events ClubRegistration.net

PS autocross is fun & useful as well. Lots of standing around though
