Caravan info for the Nor'Easter Lake Placid weekend, 6/12
Half the fun is getting there, right?
Several of us plan to meet at this parking spot overlooking Bear Mountain on Friday morning (June 12) between 10AM-11AM. We'll take the Taconic Parkway up for a nice scenic ride and stop for lunch somewhere north of Albany.
We'll then continue onto Lake Placid and should arrive by check-in time.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...6,0.65094&z=11
Right now, the list of people that will be at the meeting point are:
1. PistolPete
2. Blackhawk
3. Penguin
4. gonzo
5. Retired-Teach
6. Macscaymans*
7.
8.
*North of I-84
Anyone else?

I wonder if there are any "comfort stations" before we get to Albany.

Yeah, the WOODS! It's been many years, but I do seem to remember pull off areas on the Taconic that far north.

And also of someday. From the looks of the route using Google Maps, the first real rest area is when we exit the Taconic Parkway and pick up the NYS Thruhway (I-90).

Re: Caravan info for the Nor'Easter Lake Placid weekend, 6/12
I've been warned by bwass24 to make sure we're topped off with gas before getting on the Taconic. Beautiful drive, but there is NOTHING for miles around...
Two rest areas on the Taconic:
Latitude: 42.06828
Longitude: -73.72424
Latitude: 42.26234
Longitude: -73.61311

We'll scout the hotel and roads out for ya! I've been warned to bring plenty of insect repellent.

Re: Caravan info for the Nor'Easter Lake Placid weekend, 6/12
Looks like there is a rest stop off the Taconic right north of the I-84 intersection:
Latitude: 41.55837
Longitude: -73.78033
Google Maps
At the intersection of Rt. 52. If the time works for you, you can wait for use here and we'll swing by to pick you up. We'll be heading past there anyway.
Let me know...

Excellent!
Remember everyone, the plan is to stop for a late lunch north of Albany, so plan for gas and food accordingly.

Re: Caravan info for the Nor'Easter Lake Placid weekend, 6/12
New meeting area for those that plan to join the group on the Taconic north of I-84
Google Maps
Latitude: 41.54768
Longitude: -73.77479
If you choose the satellite view, you'll see a gas station (closed) that straddle the north and southbound lanes. The station is closed, but the area is still open and there is plenty of parking.

As an added bonus, I am almost finished collecting items for an emergency road kit that I will bring with me including a battery jumper. I just need to make sure it is charged before I leave.

Thanks to input from penguin, here's the first cut of our caravan route to Lake Placid.

We'll work out the meeting times as we get closer. For now, comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Re: Caravan info for the Nor'Easter Lake Placid weekend, 6/12
Let's get an electronics headcount for our little group?
2 x Escort 9500ci (gonzo & Teach)
1 x V1 (me)
1 x Escort 8500 (NYCayman)
2 x V1 spare (NYCayman & Blackhawk)
We're going to be setting off false alarms with each other due to all the static we'll be generating!
