Road Atlanta visitor tips for photography?

Hi everyone,

I'm heading down for CroctoberFest and Petite Lemans in a month and would like some tips from the locals that have been to the track.

I'm interested in getting some nice action shots of the cars without being too far away (I have a 300mm lens) or trapped behind a fence. Any advice on that turn(s) and areas I should concentrate on?

Thanks for the help!

There are 2 key places to get classic Road Atlanta shots, and a couple of more that I like.

Turn 10a/10b which are where the PorschePlatz is will always provide great shots of both the high speed braking zone / passing zone, as well as cars accelerating off of 10b up the hill. You'll be able to get great shots straight on into 10 from right in front of the Porsche Platz with a lot of great passing moves, and from outside 10b just across from the PorschePlatz (the first pic is 10b exit from outside the turn at the fence).

The other great place, which is now even better with some of the recent changes for motorcycles is looking back up the esses from turn 5 now all the way back to turn 3. It's a schelp from where we'll be HQed, but it's a long day and worth the trek. (second pick is the new view from the hill side at turn 5 back up the esses, and the 3rd is the exit of turn 5 at the fence)

The other great shots are from behind going up the hill inside turn 1 into turns 2/3 (a 5 minute walk), and outside of the Suzuki bridge looking down the hill into 12 (opposite of 10a/10b).

I'll be happy to point you in the right direction!

At night, check out turn 6 to inspect the red glow of the brake rotors. A hint about walking around RA - the red Georgia clay dust is virtually impossible to remove from you shoes after spending the weekend at RA. After 11 years of attending this event, we have never discovered an easy method of extracting the dust from our sneakers. This would apply to the interior of your autos as well.
Last year there was a camp fire ban due to the drought. Understand that is the case again this year. The dust that is kicked up by all the traffic over the 4 day event will keep one busy for days cleaning your car (or in out case, the RV’s).

+1 on that! Late one Sunday afternoon years ago, there was an absolute downpour which combined with thousands of cars leaving the site at once (at the conclusion of the race) to turn the entire area around the track into a quagmire. When I sold my car four years later, there were still signs of red clay in the wheel wells, the underside of the car, and under the hood despite meniacal efforts to clean those areas. The floormats simply had to be tossed - there was no saving them!

As for pictures, I recommend turn 10a, which is especially fun to watch at night as the rotors glow when the cars deccelerate as they come down the hill into the 90 degree left-hander. I also think standing at 4 and looking up the track, or at 5 and looking down the track, as they come through "The Esses" provides great shots.

There also used to be (it's been a number of years since I've been, unfortunately) a nasty little bump the cars would hit as they accellerate out of turn 8. If you had a quick lens, you could catch a car going airborne for a fraction of a second there. It made for some very cool pictures!

That's right, the red clay of GA. I spent some time in Columbus, GA doing for work for AFLAC about 16 years ago and you're right, that stuff never comes off the shoes!
