FasTrak Transponder - Where/How to Mount?

I have a FasTrak transponder I want to use in my Cayman, but want to make it as unobtrusive as possible. Any suggestions? Any suggestions for a removable hanger of sorts that I can hang from the mirror whenever I want to go across a bridge? Does one even exist or do I need to make one?

I'd rather NOT do the front license plate mount. I'd rather not mount the front license plate at all!

When I lived in the Bay Area, I kept mine in the glove box until I knew I was going to cross a bridge, then I would take it out and put on the dash down by the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side... once across the bridge it went back into the glove box... I didn't want to permanently mount it on the windshield... I never had a problem with the toll not being acknowledged. YMMV, though.

Like Brad, I keep FastTrak in the center stack, armrest or door storage compartments, depending on the car.

There have been discussions about this in the past and some CC members have pointed out that they were under the impression, in their local, that the FastTrak transponder was supposed to be attached to the windshield.

    Okay,

Put it in the glove box/closet and forget about it. The unit has a built in chip with a assigned number that the receiver *the unit that reads you* receives. This unit will pick it up if you mounted it under the car.

Also, The license plate is assigned to the account so you do not even need it in your car as the computer cross refferences your tag when you blow thru..

So keep the dam thing in the closet and go drive......

Mine is on the bottom-right hand corner of the windshield, which my wife hates for aesthetic reasons. I had it behind the center rear-view mirror, but this made it difficult to adjust the mirror with the lack of room in that area. My wife mounted the transponder in the glove-box of our LR3, which I hate; as I sometimes forget to open the door or drive through with one hand holding the door open-which is just asking for trouble as I breeze through at 40mph.

I have noticed on the few occasions that I forgot to open the glove-box that about 25% of the time the transponder does not get detected and I get my picture taken. So are you saying that I don't have to open the glove-box, and the transponder should be getting detected? My wife is right (she'll never know), and I can put the transponder in the glovebox of my Cayman?

Yes, the lack of a front plate is not an issue with the FastTrak transponder.

But, the readers at the Golden Gate Bridge were less receptive to picking-up my Caltrans issued FastTrak unit. I would definitely pull the FastTrak out of the glove box / arm rest and hold it up by the rear view mirror when going through the toll plaza on any of the bridges in order to assure a good read.

I just throw it on the dash when I am about to cross a bridge, then after I'm through the toll booth I punch it and the transponder slides off the dash into my hand, or if I am not quick, onto the floor.

You don't need to attach the thing permanently.

i also keep my transponder within reach and out of view when not needed, although i've not registered our new license plate as of yet for the Cayman.

does anyone know if, when FastTrak does not *bleep* and they take a picture if they take it of the front or back license plate?

i would VERY MUCH not like to mount that front plate if i don't absolutely have to. i did get a $100 ticket (metermaid) a few years ago for not having a front plate on my TT, and then another fixit ticket (if not fixed something like $500 fine) a year later and finally mounted it.
    *sigh*

My recollection is that the photo is of the back plate. Several times after I first signed up for FastTrak the device did not beep as I drove through a booth, and a few days later I got a "ticket" in the mail. I protested each time by providing my FastTrak information and the fines were waived.

But now when that happens I don't even get the ticket. I believe that once you are in the FastTrak system, even if the transponder or receiver don't talk when you go through a booth, your plate is identified as an enrolled vehicle and there is no problem.

Over the past 2 years or so, the lack of a front plate has never been an issue for me.

+1, 4 years of no front plate & no problems if the FasTrak transponder didn't read. By the way the visual display on the left side of the toll lane displays "Valid FasTrak" or "Valid ETC" once it has read your transponder.
