New Cayman S Owner

Hi everybody! I am picking up my '06 Cayman S this Saturday from Porsche Silverstone, I can't wait! Was able to get a great deal..good discount on the car and even got a very good price for my p/x.

I have been researching away the last few weeks on the forum, must say it has been a great source of information. However, my wallet may take a denting because of it! It is good to see a lot of high quality performance products out there.

Spec of the car: Basalt Black, 19" Sport Design, PASM, Bi-Xenons, PCM, Sports Seats, Sports Steering Wheel, Park Assist, Sound Package Plus, Full Climate Control, Cruise Control.

I am down in Surrey, anyone else in this area? Also thinking of heading down to Parr near Gatwick...heard they know their stuff?

Cheers, Skandan

Welcome Skandan.........

I'm in Camberley - NW Surrey...........

Good to hear of your Good Fortune...........

Parr Motorsport are Good - But Expensive............

I Put my Trust in 'Northway Porsche' who do as good a job - but their labour rates are lower (£50/Hour)

Northway Porsche are all Porsche GB Trained Mechanics, and are 10 mins away from the Porsche GB HQ.............

Let me know where you are by PM and perhaps we can meet up - & See What the 'Yellow Peril' can do...........

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Kareldeeley- I am located in the outskirts of South Croydon (thank god i dont live in central/west croydon!), so not too far from yourself. Definately up for meeting...the 'Yellow Peril' looks fantastic. Have read all the performance parts you have installed, would be great to see them in person and how they have improved the car. I am getting a car cover from Parr so will head down and check them out. Will check out Northway as well, cheers for the heads up. Want to build a good relationship with an indy...plan to keep the car for quite a while so in the long run I think will prove beneficial.

I don't need to have a service done until March 2010, but have read one of your posts saying it is possible just to get a minor service done with Porsche to get the service book stamped, and then get oil change and brake fluid changed through an indy? If I get this done will my service record show a difference to someone who got the full service done through Porsche?

JackWood- Thanks for your comment. Am chuffed with the car. I had a BMW 325 sport coupe before, prior to that I had a '04 Civic Type-R. The BMW was a good car, but was more of a cruiser. Lack of driver involvement compared to the Type-R was the reason I wanted to get rid of it. Considered buying the E46 M3, but the Cayman impressed me so much more!

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Thaty's a lovely car, had my eye on that too

Just picked myself a CS yesterday from Porsche Guildford - doubt I got as good a deal but very pleased none the less.

I must live 10 mins away from you down the road in Redhill. At least you will have a good drive home - so far I've had a congested drive home home on the a3 & m25, rolll on the weekend .........

Re: New Cayman S Owner

fscwheeler- thanks a lot. I went down to guildford to test drive a few cars. Very nice down there....I am only 24 and the sales guy let me take a car for an hour unaccompanied! Later found out through West London Porsche that the minimum age for this type of test drive was 25! Thank god i didnt prang it! LOL!

Who were you dealing with there....i think the sales guy i spoke to was Shaun/Sean?

Seems to be a few of us located near one another...heard a meet is being planned soon...will definately be up for that!

Whats the spec of your car?

fmarshall- Cheers. Cant wait to pick it up now....week is going so slowly! Supposed it isnt as bad as waiting months for a new build!

Bring on the weekend! Skandan

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Good service allowing you at 24 to take a car for an hour on your own. My son also 24 a few months ago, was looking at ordering a new or near new Boxster. He has maximum NCD and a clean licence. Both the OPC's in Chester and Wilmslow would not let him drive any car due to his age. The visit to Chester was for a Porche Driver Experience two hour session where they new in advance that he was 24 and was wanting to drive. However he did not drive and got a ride for 40 minutes in a Boxster. Also one of the OPC's asked him if his 'mum or dad bank' would like to look at the cars as many youing people have their Porsche bought for them. Given my son has always financed his own cars then that further put him off.

He was unimpressed with both OPC's and traded his Cooper S for a new Scirocco 2.0T DSG a few weeks later. No doubt he will look at Porsche again when he is older.

You would think when UK sales are down 30% on 2008 and new cars are sat in OPC's to buy they would have made an effort to take his money off him.

Re: New Cayman S Owner

I found the OPC experience varied, and although all were very friendly, Guildford were the only ones who sent me off with my girlfriend (both 29) for 30mins at a time unaccompanied once with a CS and once with a 911. And then I went back and did it again next week!!

Yup it was Sean who sold me the car and sent me off for my test drives - nice chap and unlike the other OPC's only rung me once a week instead of once an hour .

I went for the Meteor Grey 07 CS - 19" SD with PASM, SC, PSE, Sports S/Wheel, ParkAssist. As a purely weekend driver, and even though my Audi TT had all of these as stock, I decided I could live without the luxury items, and got what I view as the 'fun' ones. However PCM, HID's, and sports seats would have been very nice as well (not that i've turned the stereo on yet - engine noise is too enjoyable).

However already getting the urge to install the softronic SRP and a double din satnav - but trying to resist as already went over budget with the car

Yup a meet up would be good - and probably wise before spending a load of cash on mods!!

OK Looks Like there are 3 of us in Surrey in the CaymanClub......... Maybe a Sunday Meet - Tramp Around the Back Roads Epsomish? Pub Lunch?

NorthWay Porsche Welcome to Northway Porsche Limited are Great - They Have Done Lots of my Work... (The Difficult Bits! - I Put the SRP in...etc) Ask For 'Paul' - He Knows Caymans Intimately Now!

I Went to Porsche GB HQ Reading for my 1st Service - Ask for the Right Service Manager......... Nudge Nudge Wink Wink (I'll tell you 'less publicly' to protect the individual) Who is good mates, with the Northway Porsche boys.........

And He Looks the Car over and Does a Service 'Light' / Thorough Check Over + adjustments & all Works Orders & Upgrades @ 1 Hour 'Labour'....
& Trusts that the Oil Services Brake Flushes etc are Done (OK I Did Mine....)

Stamps & Signs Your Book - Officially Porsche GB HQ.............. Enough Said?

He Even Gave me the Bits for the Motorsport Air/Oil Separator Kit... (Over £500 in Parts.......)

OK With the 'Yellow Peril' in 2 1/2 years it has only done 6,576 miles & Oil Changed Twice (Once when Extended Sump Fitted!)- Brake Fluid Changed 3 times - 3 Sets of Brake Pads. And with all of the upgrades - He KNOWS it is a Pampered and cared for individual.

Re: New Cayman S Owner

I was always concerned with buying a car of this nature due to my age, so I was pleasantly surprised that guildford let me take the car out by myself. The sales guy knew i had driven a few other caymans before so seemed v.comfortable letting me go off on my own. He also knew that my father is close friends with the after sales manager at W.London which is one of the Porsche owned OPC's, also include Reading, Hatfield, Mayfair + Guildford? (so may have been the reason for better treatment!). Hopefully the good relationship my dad has with W.London will mean i should get good service from them in the future .

However i had a very bad experience with Porsche Newcastle. I sorted out a deal over the phone before going to see the car (didnt want to drive all the way up there and they screw me over on p/x & discount). Paperwork came down and the cheeky b*****ds did not pass through the discount on their car as confirmed over the phone TWICE. They came back saying 'sorry sir there must have been a misunderstanding on your side...', further to that i found out from the Business manager that the sales guy had not entered any of my details or the deal in to their CRM system!!! At that point I didnt even wait for them to come back with what they could do, i just asked for my deposit back!

BTW the car is still at Newcastle, it is silver 06 cayman s on for £30,990 in case anyone is looking at buying it.

fscwheeler- very nice car you have there! I am intersted too in the Softronic Plenum, also from the exhaust shootout video i am interested in the AWE/Tubi (maybe too loud) exhausts. As you said would be great to hear/see them in person before spending the money on them! We will have to sort out a mini Surrey meet soon.

Sorry for the ridiculouly long post!

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Re OPC Newcastle which is owned by JCT600, the Leeds a based company - 'Did not enter in their CRM system' No surprise then as motor dealers rely on a paper chase generally in my experience. They have limited IT knowledge and make little use of IT. I have my own IT consultancy implementing ERP, CRM HR etc and I never found a Porsche or BMW dealer to make effective use of IT. But there must be some that do use IT effectively.

I looked at ordering a new E92 M3 before it was launched and the BMW salesman picked up a pile of completed pre order forms that were all hand written. Then told me he could get a car within a month of it being launched. I asked how he could be so sure and he said that I could leave that to him. I asked how their order to inventory allocation worked and he said - each salesman has his own pile of pre orders and when inventory is ready to be allocated they get togther and put all the pre orders on a table, count them and allocated as a group. So no central records of what is pre orderered to match against demand.

Re: New Cayman S Owner

kareldeeley- I have got a while until the next service but you can let me know more details at a meet. Was installing the plenum a tricky job?

Epsom sounds good to me. Should be easy for fscwheeler to get too aswell?

Dont know if you know of Romans International – One of the country’s leading suppliers of highly prestigious and specialist cars it is down the road from Epsom, near Kingswood. On the A-road that joins junction 8 m25. They currently have 2 987 Turbos, 987 GT2 (No Carrera GT though!), 3 Enzos, 5 F430s, 599gtb, veyron, slr, lp-640, 2 lp-540s......... . Definately worth a visit.

roger frost- I didnt realise the motor dealers operated that way. I would of thought they'd all be computerised by now! The reason i mentioned it was while i was on the phone to the business manager he was looking through their system and he said there were no records, and there should of been....i'm glad it happened as i was lucky enough to get a better car (really wanted 19" sport designs, but also PASM) and better deal.

Your son must be enjoying the Scirocco?! VW have made a quality car there. I've read it steps up the handling from the golf gti noticeably?

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Scirocco - yes it is impressive and it is in white which make it look good but then colour is subjective (for a VW) Apparently they handle a little better than a Golf GTI and I think it may be the 40mm extra track it has and the optional active suspension. Also for not alot extra has multiple connections for IPod, USB, etc integrated with the in built screen in the dash board.

Installing the Plenum Was Quite Easy - Although 'ME' - (Sad Fat Old Git) Short of Height (5'8")and of Ample Girth ..........

I Took the Route of getting all of the tools needed, & Components in the Boot Area, Left and Right.....

Remove Carpeted Top Cover & Engine Cover From Outside............

Cloth in the Boot/Trunk - Wearing TrackSuit & Clogs (It is Not a Messy Job) Slip Clogs Off, and Step into, and Kneel, in the Boot area (More Difficult With My Rear Wing)

Set to Work............... 45 Mins Later, All Hunky Dory...............

I'll PM You Both for a Sunday Meet.............. (How about Ranmore Common as a Drive....?)

Re: New Cayman S Owner

Pleased to hear the install isn't too much of a palaver although will probably take me 4x the time as not too mechanically minded.

Epsom is fine and as used to live that way I regularly drive past Romans on the A217 (nearly caused many a crash due to rubbernecking!). Happy to go to Ranmore Common too, never been that way, so could be fun. Only thing being I find out Mon/Tue if i'm going to be away for a week or 2 on work, so I may not be able to do for a couple of weekends?

Enjoy your pick up tomorrow Skandan, sure you'll have a big grin all the way home.

Steve
