Now EVO Magazine don't like the Baby K

I just got the latest issue of EVO with their Car of the Year. The new £2,456,800 Ferrari just shaves the £8.99 Suzuki Swift (or something).

EVO were given a Cayman 2.7 with £10k worth of options (yes, a £46k non-S!) but it didn’t have the 6-speed gearbox - at all of £450 (it already had PASM).

They complain the 5-speed’s ratios don’t suit the peaky engine and that's its slower than a Vauxhall Astra VXR and it feels over-tyred. This is inspite of raving over the turn-in and steering feel two months ago; "glorious steering feel, faithful front end........a proper Porsche"

They now think the non-Sport BMW Z4 is a better steer - the Cayman 2.7 trounced this, the Audi TT 3.2, the Nissan 350z and the 335i in their test recently.

Fickle s*ds. Who would you believe?

I'll look forward to reading it. We're always a bit late getting our issues in the States.

I suppose they have different writers commenting, but it would be nice to have some consistency. But we already know which car is best, eh?

Just read it (or some of it) and it makes depressing reading. The people who write this stuff do not appear to inhabit the same world as the rest of us.

It seems to come down to two objections ... the car is too slow, and it costs too much. OK, lets do them one at a time.

Too slow? It doesn't seem so long ago that only bona-fide supercars could do 160 mph and 0-60 in 6 seconds (which is what the Cayman does). Now it seems every little tin box hatchback can do that, and ludicrous numbers of cars on sale can top 200 mph. Err ... WHY? The developed world has become obsessed with speed cameras and fines for speeding, yet these magazines prattle on as if they all existed in a vacuum. My Cayman strikes me as plenty fast enough thank you, at least for the real roads that I use every day. I would argure that it is not the Cayman that is too slow, but that too many other cars these days are pointlessly fast.

Too Expensive? Sure, Porsches are expensive cars, but like Swiss watches and bench grade shoes there are some things worth paying a bit more for. An own goal for Porsche though for supplying a base model car stacked to the eyeballs with expensive extras, no wonder they complained about the cost. And why this obsession that stripped base model Porsches are somehow unacceptable? ... which only defeats their own arguement. This is a sports car for heavens sake, not a limo, keep it simple!

In short their criteria seems to be little more than "bang for the buck" and on this level the Cayman will never shine. This simplistic approach completely overlooks that the Cayman is one of the most delightful cars to own and drive that money car buy, and I wouldn't swap mine for a lorry load of plastic Loti, or stickered up French tin boxes, no matter how fast they go.

OK ... rant over!

If the Cayman is too slow, how about the SLK 200 Kompressor, TT 2 litre or BMW Z4 2 litre! The new MX-5 must be a c**p car with <200bhp!
Recent issues from EVO had completely lost its plot!! Sometimes i thought I was reading MAX POWER!
The only car magazine I buy week in week out is Autocar---Their road tests is more comprehensive than any car magazine round the globe!!
Other mags, just a quick glance and left them on the supermarket shelve!!!
Owners of non-s Cayman will had more opportunity to stretch their engine than the BMW M6 owner without the threat of going to jail! However I do agreed that at this current climate, 5 speed is very mean!!!
Porsche will never need TV advert like Audi, Mercedes or BMW. The badge sells itself and generates public envy or hate depends where you live!!!
