Gran Turismo V Prologue
Anyone play this yet? Picked up a copy today (along with a free GT5p t-shirt) from Circuit City, but I haven't had a chance to put it in the PS3 (waiting for the kids to go to bed)...

$40 for a demo version with zero Pcars and no damage modeling... f them. It is like paying for half-a$$ product.
Now that steering wheel package that supposed to come out for PS3, that I am definitely waiting to come out.

So in other words, you haven't actually played the game.
From what I've read, it's got 7 unique tracks and over 70 cars to drive, which hardly makes this a simple demo. Plus free online play, head to head play, ability to tune the cars you drive, and arcade play. No, it's not the complete game, and no, there are no P-cars yet, but it's still one heck of a content-heavy title, so if you want to save your $40 and wait another year to avoid the "half-a$$ product" for the full version to come out, that's your prerogative. I'm satisfied spending $3/month for the next year to be given the chance to play this now. I wasn't asking for opinions about what people thought of Polyphony's decision to release this in lieu of the full version.
Damage modeling is supposed to come out as a downloadable update sometime later in the year. And I'll be satisfied driving a REAL P-car instead of in a video game for the time being.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the full thing is going to be like $100+... so yes, I really don't want to pay twice for the same thing. And I would like to play with the 997TT or other Pcars.
I am early adopter on enough things. At some point I have to say to myself that I have enough new toys
I just have way too many hobbies.

The full game is scheduled to release at an MSRP of $59.99 (which is currently a standard price for next-gen console games), not $100. This price is just for the game, not the game + steering wheel package.

Speaking of steering wheel package
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/ga...s/131&cl=us,en
From what I have read, this one is a great package, but at $299.... ouch.

But are there really games yet that take the clutch into account? Most games I've played just use sequential clutch free shifting. I see there is a list of compatible games but I'd like to see just how compatible they are with the clutch and if certain things like rev matching and stalls and certain things are taken into account.

I don't think I've ever seen a steering wheel/pedal controller for any game console that had a clutch pedal. Trying to actuate gas + brake + clutch using something like a Playstation Dualshock controller would be too painful...
Incidentally, after spending a little under 24 hours with this game now, I have to say: unbelieveable. Most accurate physics modeling I have ever seen in a mass produced video game. The first time I ran it, it automatically connected to the internet and downloaded an update, so technically I'm playing "Gran Turismo V Prologue Spec II". The game connects to the Playstation Network and downloads real-time weather reports for cities around the world so you can actually race in the conditions and time that the real city is experiencing now.
So far, only been able to afford a Honda Integra Type R and Mitsubishi Evo IX, but both are a blast to drive. Even the car interiors and engine sounds are realistic and unique to each car model.

Yeah, but does the game have that new car smell? If not, it's just a piece of junk.
I'm off to buy my copy after work. Like apsinkus, I hate to plunk down the dollars on the Prologue version, but I can't wait another 14 and a half years for the full version to come out.

Interpol, I agree with you about the dual shock; I can barely fly my warhawk around using the built in motion sensor
But that steering wheel by logitech is supposed to be good because it includes an actual 6-point shifter and clutch that is supposed to simulate a real transmission. I was just wondering how close it actually gets...

It looks great! Is it any good? How are the driving physics? Did they finally put damage in the game now? What is the customization engine like?
Sony needs to hurry up with releasing the full game. The PS3 is hurting badly.

Did they fix the collision modeling and AI? I played the GT5 prologue demo and the AI really sucked. The computer cars basically ran their line regardless of what was happening (ie. they plowed straight into you). And I can T-bone another car, and hardly jar it from its course, but a slight tap by a computer car and mine is completely destabilized. It was as if they were using a dumbed down physics model for all other cars and a really sophisticated one for your car (which isn't too hard to believe, since most games do rendering that way too).

suneet, MX vs. ATV untamed makes full use of a clutch.

I got the Japanese version 3 months ago.
It is great.
I have the G25 wheel/pedals in a Sparco cockpit.

There is no clutch feedback, but the sensation of shifting is cool. Plus, in the cockpit view your hands on the screen reach down and shift when you shift.

It isn't a demolition derby. It is like driving a car you don't want to crash.
I think the simulation is awesome. You really need a cockpit an wheel, though.

Personally I am extremely impressed with what's been released so far with regard to the driving physics. Each car has its unique handling features and quirks and appears as realistic as you can get with a console game.
Currently, there is still no damage modeling in the game, as has been the norm for the Gran Turismo series. However, Polyphony has announced that they are planning an update this fall that will introduce car damage modeling. This update will be free and will be downloadable.

Don't know if you've played any of the previous GT games, eecsdude, but IMO the AI has actually improved somewhat compared to the previous versions. Still, for the most part the opponent cars do simply follow a line, although it does appear that they do make a little effort to avoid you if you are alongside.

2008 is supposed to be a banner year for the PS3. In addition to making the device fully Blu-Ray Profile 2.0 compliant and DTS-HD MA compatibility, we're starting to get some phenomenal games like GT5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 coming out.

You can get the G25 wheel for a lot less than $299 if you shop around. You should be able to snag one for $225.
I've got one for the GTR game, and now just need to pony up for the PS3 console. For my son of course... (=;
