Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

I've decided to get an MT Boxster and am going to have to order because around here in-stock MTs are about as common as chickens with hats.

Is it just the San Francisco Bay Area or is every place practically devoid of MT Boxsters in stock?? Wondering if this is a local(ish) phenomenon or if manuals are more plentiful in places that traditionally drive more MTs like, say, Europe (Germany?).

    Cheers,
    Fliz

Couldn't find a MT here in Virginia Beach, so I custom ordered. It's better anyway, with all the options available, you get more bang for your buck when you pick and choose your own options. Good luck!!

You can get some idea of an answer to your question if you check on autotrader or another site that allows you to look at new 718s for sale across the country. I'll bet Porsche sell > 20 PDK's across their whole product line for every 1 MT. I'm sure there are more MT 718 sold than MT 991.2, but still think that PDK easily outsells MT even for the 718. And actually, in Europe MT is considered the transmission for less expensive cars so I'm pretty sure that MT's are not more plentiful on new Porsches over there.

I have a MT on my 718S and love it, but you have to realize the performance numbers of a 718 PDK are substantially better than for the MT.

Early this year a dealer and publication quoted around 90% of new Porsche will be sold with PDK. Of course 80% of Porsches sold are SUV and Panamera. Still I'm sure 2017 718's and 911's are 70% PDK at least. PDK doesn't seem to increase resale value, just initial purchase price, Porsche loves to option every basic in their cars.

Cayenne's have Tiptronic, not PDK. However, I have heard anecdotally that close to 90% of the sportscars have PDK. I have only ever seen one new MT car at the local dealer. Chickens in hats indeed.

Probably has something to do with the NASDAQ being over 6000 and everyone being rich. I tried to buy a used 997.2 cab a few years ago and they all sold within 3 days of listing private party. Ended up ordering a new Boxster instead.

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

The Bay Area dealer I bought my Cayman from (Carlsen) had one MT Boxster for me to drive. All the other 718s were PDK.

But given that the dealer lot specs are pretty different from what I wanted, I was likely to order anyway, which is what I did. Only downside was a 4 month wait...

It's the same here in and around the Los Angeles area. PDK's out number MT 10 if not 20 to one. I was looking used and ended up with PDK. Note I did not say "settled for" because the PDK is the best manumatic on the market so living with it is not bad at all. Good luck with your search.

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

When I started shopping for my CGTS 2+ years ago I really wanted to drive a manual - I had already driven a PDK as part of the Porsche Roadshow, but I felt like I really needed to drive a manual before committing to dropping that much money on a vehicle. I checked 4 or 5 bay area dealers, and none had a manual Cayman or Boxster. I talked to a rep at each and tried to get them to call me if a manual came in that I could drive, but no one wanted to call me back. (That's another thread we've had a few times... don't count on much personal attention from dealers out here.)

I did start trolling inventory online and finally found a used Boxster that came into Sonnen that I was able to drive - and unsurprisingly I loved the manual!

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

It's no different here on the east coast (Connecticut). A survey of the four state dealers results in 90% of the Cayman/Boxsters for sale with PDK's, and the rare manuals are typically lightly spec'd. I found the same when I was shopping for my '15 981 and ended up ordering mine as I didn't like either of the two manual 981's the two dealerships I visited had in stock.

Not a local phenomenon, nor is it relegated just to Porsche's offerings, I'm afraid. I ordered my 981 GTS with a stick having only tested those with PDK, and same with my current daily. I've seen the same issue with most sporty cars on lots. The only exception to my anecdotal experience is the Corvette. There always seems to be at least one manual available at any lot at any given time.

    Yes, I did.

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

There's something of a chicken-and-egg thing going on here, though. The dealers know they can sell a PDK to almost anyone...even to some folks who would rather drive a manual. So they're afraid to order any manuals for stock because they know they won't be able to sell them to just anybody. This effect is probably at least half responsible for the manual's demise...

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

When I bought my 718 late last year I had to special order the MT. I'm in Los Angeles, I found one in Long Beach that I test drove but it wasn't spec'ed the way I wanted it. That was the only MT I could find at any dealership within 100 miles of LA.

Does the lack of manuals mean someone who buys one takes a devalue over a PDK? Have been wondering if the scarcity makes the MT less valuable.

Re: Few Manuals In Stock In SF Bay Area

I do not necessarily think so, and I did not get that sense when looking to buy a 2014 base Manual. In fact, with only a $8 - 10K price difference between a 2014 or a new ordered 2017, I went with the latter. I have never had trouble selling "rare" manuals, including a Cayenne GTS and 2014 Accord Sport.
    Current:
    2019 Sierra AT4 6.2L
    2008 Range Rover HSE
    2017 Cayman
    1986 Jeep CJ7

    Prior of interest:
2009 GTS Manual w/ PDCC (fabulous, but geared to low for daily commute)
2007 Cayman (favorite of all time, but unresolved flaws)
