    Re: Return of the six?????!!!!!!

Meanwhile...back on topic...I seem to recall a comment by Nick Murray in his recent "why 718s aren't selling" video to the effect that the base Cayman (2020?) he was given as a recent loaner had not only standard switchable sports exhaust, but a more mellow reworked exhaust note.

    https://youtu.be/-YCLvZ1bA6Q

The standard sport exhaust seems to be confirmed here:

    https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/7...xhaust-system/

I can't tell from Nick's video, really, whether the exhaust note in the car he was driving was better/worse/different but he seemed to think so.

Has the 2020 exhaust note of the base 718 actually been refactored by PCNA so that the note is less noticeable? It would seem that if subjectively the "exhaust sound" is a concern by a new 718 buyer, that making it slightly less noticeable (but retaining the ability to hear it via PSE) might remedy one of the most quoted objections to the turbo 4 cyl engine?

You can’t add two cylinders and that’s the secret sauce.

The "car thing" isn't about how much a car might be worth, or how much you're sure to make on it. It's about how it makes you feel when you're behind the wheel. It's about how it makes you feel when you walk up to it, or walk away from it. Or even when you wash it by hand. ~Dr. Bud E. Bryan~ autoextremist.com

If this is actually true, I would be contacting my local dealer to put a deposit down on a Zuffenhausen Delivery of a 718 T NA6 6MT in Silver w Black Interior and SC in about...5 seconds.

I prefer performance to sound any time so the NA6 can't begin to compare to the turbo 4. With the turbo you max power at around 2,000 RPM while in the NA6 you have to wait until around 5,000 RPM. I get to enjoy the tremendous surge of power in my 718 Base Boxster from almost every stop while on my 981 I very seldom felt that surge because it took too long to get to 5,000 RPM in town. If you are really interested in the sound then look at a site called "Trombone scooter"

That's one of the nicest exhaust "notes" I've heard recently.

I agree to your post partially. I own a Spyder. The 718 motor is a great motor for daily driving because of the turbos. The Spyder has a bit more grunt than a base 981 would but its still castrated cause of long gearing. Now imagine a 718 but with an uncorked 3.8 like in the GT4 Clubsport. Would you still pick that rather boring and horrible sounding motor? I know I wouldn't. I like Performance as much as the next guy as well. But some things just have to go hand in hand.

If the price were the same, I'd pick the 3.8 GT4 Clubsport 718. But the price is not the same, or likely will not be the same.

There, there. You are making it sound like there is a difference in driving feel like between my ex 2006 1.9 liter TDI and 718 base. It isn't. ESPECIALLY in traffic. I had turbocharged inline 6 with 320 hp and all 315 lbft available at 1,400 rpm. I sold it because it was very unpredictable on the racetrack (because turbo) and because of a huge frustration to drive it in traffic. You touch the throttle and you are rear-ending people ahead of you, none of which learned what the throttle is for in driver's ed.

Frankly, I hate driving that Cayman in traffic like anybody else, but not having that torque immediately on is actually a feature, not a bug - at least IMO. And in my experience. Working it hard on the track is also a feature - at least when it sounds so divine and it takes its sweet time to get to a 7,600 rpm cutoff. Surgeon's blade precision on throttle mid-corner is cherry on the cake.

Performance? Well, I, for one, am glad to be able to not care about it. Because, if I did, I would die of hunger. Meaning, if my driving talent was putting food on the table (why else would you care about performance?), it wouldn't put much of it on there, if any.

Really? I'd be willing to bet that Porsche is going to manufacturer a six-cylinder Boxster again and that it's going to cost at least $90k. And that's for starters. It certainly won't be less expensive than the GTS Boxster.

Much as I want a six-cylinder car [footnote here: I ordered one, an "S" in Dec. 2016. Porsche AG accepted the order and then cancelled the order six weeks later.], I can't imagine paying $90k-plus for one. I appreciate that Boxsters are exceptional cars, but they aren't worth $90 to me.

I have a 2014 Cayman and just bought out my lease. Ended up with about $15000 in equity. Seems Porsche either expected it to be worth less, or the 6cyl market is much higher values due to the lack of being able to get a new one. I’m betting the latter as I’m pretty sure Porsche has a pretty good idea how much they’re gonna be worth with historical markets, without a 4cyl disruptor.

Either way I’ve got an amazing car that sounds incredible. Return of the six?????!!!!!!

Gotta agree. Porsche just keeps jacking up the price and we let them get away with it lol. I am wondering how much my next fix is going to cost me.

Fair enough. But luckily there are those that will, and those folks let other folks buy them after a depreciation hit. WIN-WIN!

    90 large. Cough. Well.

Sadly my accountant (aka my wife) agrees with you. I broached the concept with her gingerly the other evening. After I got pursed lips, that ‘hmpf’ sound, and a hip thrust, I knew I was not holding a winning hand. (Married guys will get this).

She said, “So let me get this straight: you want to trade your car, a fantastic daily driver with a spine-tingling NA Flat 6, plus what, $60 grand, for a new fantastic daily driver with a spine-tingling NA Flat 6, and a backup camera?”

Sadly I did not have a snappy comeback for that.

I guess I’ll be driving my ‘14 981 CS for a while longer.

So in my house we are co-accountants with some autonomy when it comes to discretionary funds even at this level, we make about the same money and other than to say we take of the family expenditures jointly we diverge on the need for toys... I have been saving for the past 4 years, ever since I took delivery of my 16' BGTS in August 2015 just in case Porsche built just one more car I just had to have. If the 718 Spyder with 4.0l NA appears, that would be it!

FWIW, the other things to consider, especially as your car is off warranty (mine too in a few months) is the following:

    • If you have PDK, keep a slush fund for repairs should it break
    • Mine is soon to need new tires
    • Buying an extended warranty is an option, but costs money
    • Just one more chance to get that backup camera.
    • Oh, OK the 400+ HP 4.0l NA would be nice!

So the cost of a set of tires, extended warranty for 4 years (to match a new car), return to zero miles on the chassis from a wear and tear standpoint (brakes, clutch and other wear items) would add up to multiple thousands of dollars, for some it might be a stretch but I consider that money as needed to keep my 2016 in good working condition, so a new car comes with a lot of the covered and therefore counts in the justifying equation...

Seriously my 2016 BGTS is not a hardship to drive, I consider myself fortunate to own it, however because I just might be able to swing it, and a 2020 718 Spyder would be very cool, I continue to save just in case.
