Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

Apart from the fact that there are limited slots available, purely for a daily driving purpose with very rare to no track events, would there be anyone who would pick a GTS over a gt4?

i have read about the constant transmission whine and road noise on a gt4 In a review but none of the owners seem to be complaining.I was just wondering about this dilemma of looking for a gt4 while I wait for my GTS.

I can't really tell what question you're asking... You seem to be contradicting yourself.

"would there be anyone who would pick a GTS over a gt4?"

    Yes. I would (and did).

    "
I was just wondering about this dilemma of looking for a gt4 while I wait for my GTS."

What does this mean? Why is looking at a GT4 a dilemma? You have a GTS on order? Cool.

What exactly is the dilemma? Are you having second thoughts about the GTS? Wishing you ordered a GT4 instead? If your order hasn't locked yet, you might be able to change it. But it might be harder to find an allocation for a GT4, and for what it's worth, dealers might be less willing to offer discounts on GT4, whereas I was able to get a small discount on my GTS.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

Many months ago (like last year), I toyed with the idea of getting in line for a GT4 when they were only a rumor vs buying a GTS. I chose the GTS. As it turns out, they seem to be different animals, at least as I configured my GTS. Briefly, my GTS with PDK and other creature comforts is just "that" ... a "Grand Turismo Sport". The GT4 is a "Motorsport" offering -- two different things, though both can play in each other's kingdom, to varying degrees.

Of course, the reality will likely be, for you, that the GTS is in hand vs a GT4-not. There has been a lot printed about enjoying both, but I can attest that the GTS is a great "turismo" that can also have a good time on track days -- (based on reports, it is not the track toy that the GT4 is. )

So, what's not to like with your GTS "in hand" ??

I am sorry for the confusion,I had a second look at the post and realize how unclear my question was.The story is that 5 months ago I was almost set on a GTS order and then the GT4 was announced. As every car enthusiast I jumped on the bandwagon that the GT4 was the car to own.As we all knew the slots quickly evaporated and I convinced myself that for my needs[strictly daily driving in the North east and no track use]I would be doing a disservice by buying a GT4.Soon I got an allocation for a GTS and ordered one for a little discount. Now a week ago,I get a letter from an out of state dealership asking if I would be wiling to place an order on a GT4 as they are potentially having an allocation.I know that I wouldn't track my 100k car.Now that this dealer has contacted me I am revisiting the same dilemma. Its too late to let go off my GTS as its already at the docks in germany but I am still banging myself.Just wanted to know the perspective of owners who opted for a GTS than a GT4.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

Quick answer for me is I would never pick a GTS over a GT4. The GT4 is perfectly livable as a daily driver as I am currently using it. Its ground clearance is no worse then my 991S. All the gearing complaints you hear from reviewers are still there in the GTS but with less power so its more noticeable. To be honest I never felt there was gearing problem but it does make sense of why I always loved driving the standard cayman over the S. If the prices between the two cars were larger I could see going for the GTS but since they are pretty much priced at the same level with the GTS even higher in most cases, its a no brainer. If you have a shot at getting a GT4 do it. As far as your ordered GTS goes as long as you haven't signed the papers for it you can still cancel, you will just lose whatever deposit you put down on it. But in most cases that is only $1,000 in which I would gladly give up to get a GT4.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

To tell the truth, I don't understand why OP wants a GTS or a GT4 for a non-track DD. Exclusivity?? Bragging rights??The satisfaction of thinking you are faster than that other Cayman? Well off the track, I bet 1 in 1000 people could tell the difference. Fewer would care. So if you're not going to use the power and performance features that you're paying so dearly for - why bother?? You'll get nearly as much prestige from those 999 people with an 'S' or even a base. Sorry, I just don't get that mentality. Definitely not worth the worrying and hand-wringing now that the car that's been ordered is nearly delivered.

OK, I get it's your money - get what you want. But don't over think it and don't second-guess yourself.

I opted for a GTS over a GT4 or Spyder. Lack of a PDK option is a show stopper for me. Wanted another convertible and manually putting the top up and down on a 100K car is ridiculous. If I wanted a coupe, I'd get a GT3 or TT.

I have a mere S, a Boxster, do not track it, and am very pleased with the car. Even though more power is better, I don't miss it. The 981 is amazingly versatile; comfy cruiser (if a tad noisy) and twisty carver. I'm even not driving the 914 since my 981. Was not true of the 986.

I gave up my BGTS for a Spyder. The reason is the 3.8. Regardless, the GTS is a PHENOMENAL car. It is not like you are 'losing' anything in any way. These cars are all phenomenal.

In 5 years the GT4 and Spyder will be worth $10K more. Particularly since the 4 cylinder versions are coming. Look at the Cayman R.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

I'd try to take a GT4 or GTS or S or base depending on YOUR need rather than getting too caught up in the admittedly tempting GT4 euphoria right now. There are a lot of pluses for the GT4 for track guys but do they suit you?

No PDK, no parking sensors, former ride, low ground clearance, attention (good n bad) grabbing wing. Depending on your applications, why compromise on these if you don't use the adjustable sways, cup2 tires, lower front splitter n wing for downforce... these are really wasted and can be a hassle on a daily drive unless you just want them to pose.

For me, GT4 is best reserved as weekend track car for the guy on a mission to reduce lap times or an otherwise extra car in the fleet that you can take out when it suits you... I understand some guys will daily drive them but I draw the line where paying more money is actually creating more daily hassle in my life than convenience.

Me too, I have maybe driven a manual car for about a month in my entire life, found it annoying then, no plans to start now.

    @op

Lower clearance and lack of a good music system are other factors I would not get a GT4.

From a pure visual perspective, I do not like the looks of the GT4 side scoops as well as the front (nor do I like it on the GT3) bumper gap.
I do however love the wing and the option to have yellow deviated stitching internally.

I take my car to the track, and for my current and future skill level and how I don't plan to compete and just enjoy I can live with the GTS.
Worst case I upgrade the brakes/rotors eventually, but for now the stock GTS suffices.

And like someone said above, if you just want a daily driver, I think there are better cars out there than any porsche or a lower model porsche.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

I've done track events, I've gone on mountain drives at illegal speeds/aggressiveness, and I've gone on back roads at legal speeds. My conclusion is this, there is just no real way to fully enjoy even a Cayman GTS at legal road speeds. Track events BY FAR are the most satisfying with quasi-legal mountain road blasts a distant second place while legal (normal) street driving a very distant third place.

These cars are so refined they are maybe a bit boring at pedestrian speeds. You really need to flog them to get the full sense and enjoyment of what you're actually buying.

I know most people aren't going to like this, but in my opinion I would say that even most of the potential of a "GTS" is wasted by driving on public roads in ways that won't get you arrested. A GT4 would be even more pointless.

A GT4 will get you a number of things over a GTS:
    - Way more prestige points
    - Better collectability/resale value
    - A little more grunt when pulling away from a redlight
    - Slightly better planted handling on backroads

On the other hand, a GTS:
    - Will be cheaper
    - Will be MUCH easier to acquire
    - Will have a more street compliant suspension
    - Will have 10mm more ground clearance
    - Will have more luxury options and amenities that street drivers might prefer

So, IMO, given your situation, the main reason you'd purchase a GT4 over a GTS would be the satisfaction of owning a rare car and the validation you would get from others - both in real life and on the internet. The driving experience would be somewhat better, but without taking full advantage of their potential on a track, I suspect the difference is going to be less than you think.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

I ordered a GTS because I was optioning up the cayman s in to GTS price range to start off with.i don't really care for the poser status.I would have picked up a 911 turbo S for that purpose. Its just that I had convinced myself that the GT4 would be a bad daily driver but it seems that many are doing fine.Does the Gt4 sit below a GTS with sport suspension?I have never been on a track and don't think that I can track my 100 k car right away. The only two reasons for considering the gt4 would be the 3.8 and the driving experience .

Again all this is speculation as my GTS is at the dock,If I have to go ahead with the GT4 I have to first figure out a way to get out off it.I had signed off on the build sheet when ordering it and don't prefer to give me SA a headache.

The GT4 sits another 10mm lower than X73 or 20mm lower than PASM on the GTS.

Re: Reasons not to buy a cayman gt4 vs a GTS

I have a 2014 Cayman S and want the GT4 as my next Cayman because the GTS is not enough of an upgrade for me. As far as I'm concerned the brakes of the S and GTS are not sufficient for hard track use. Hard use in 20-30 minute sessions can cook em on many tracks. The suspension parts of the gt3 are more rugged and safer 4 track use. I could care less about PDK not being available on the GT4. I like to choose my own gear and could care less about 2 seconds a lap difference on the track for the PDK. On the street, I'm convinced that choosing my own gear helps me avoid speeding tickets (along with using Waze and my 9500ciicon). I love the aural beauty and the significantly greater grunt of the 3.8L flat 6, and strongly prefer a NA higher displacement engine to a smaller 4 banger TT, even if the performance of the two were equal. The GT4 is practical for me since I only use my CS for blast drives on sunny days and PCA events. If the OP is worried about trashing his car at the track, he should consider buying track insurance until he builds some confidence. Don't get me wrong. The GTS is a great machine. If I didn't own a 981 CS, I might feel differently because very nice used GTSs can now be had in the $70s, if price is important, because the GT4s are pretty much unobtainable under $100+k. So I plan to just keep driving my CS until I get a GT4 or an itching for something else. Or maybe until I can steal a GTS that I like better than my CS.

completely agree. Off track the GT4 package over the GTS is pointless and actually a hassle.

If all roads were straight and flat and filled with traffic and traffic cops, I would agree with u. But there's a lot of other roads out there and I don't agree with u.

Yes, for many of the reasons stated. I'm not a track rat, like the balance and would never get a car with a wing 95% of population will see as ricer unless I actually needed it.

Now, if someone dropped off a GT3-RS........
