Evo school review (Phase 2)

Attended an Evo School Phase II on Sunday. Writing this review for those that are considering attending this at some point (and also for the sake of documentation).

Background:
As some background, I had attended a autocross events in the past year. However i am terrible at directions/ navigation, and end up spending devoting to much attention to learning the course rather than working on my car control. So I would still definitely consider myself a novice.

The day was not the best for autocross... temperature peaked in the low 50s, and was raining for much of the day. I started the day (before the rain) running with traction off, and sports mode. In the afternoon, after 2 sudden spin outs during the rain (and apparently some oil on the track), my instructor advised me to turn traction on (no more spins after that).

Day structure:
The day starts off with 3 runs with the instructor standing outside watching. He didn't give me any tips at this stage... just times. After all the cars have run, the 2nd phase consisted of I think 5-6 runs with me driving, and 2 with the instructor driving. These runs were focused on positioning the car. I did learn a lot here, and realized that I hadn't been positioning the car properly... this may seem obvious to some, but you basically need to try set up the car for the next turn at certain key cones.

There was a quick "working lunch" where we grouped together, and the instructors summarized the main takeaways from the AM. The instructors then took us out in groups in the 4 door cars, and pointed out where they were looking at each stage of the course. I found this helpful because it turns out they were looking much further than me (they are typically focused at the end of the "obstacle", or the next obstacle.

After lunch, we had 5-6 more runs where we focused on visualization ourselves. Here we worked with a different instructor. This would have been good, but I wasted 2 of my runs with the spinouts (before turning traction on). And I spent 1-2 runs driving over cautiously after the spins. So I didn't get a lot out of this, but think that I would have if the weather was nicer.

Finally, there are 3 more runs to assess improvement (with the instructor standing outside again). It wasn't a great comparison due to the change in conditions, and I believe most people could not match their best times from the AM (which were in the dry). But people (myself included) did seem to be driving better.

Verdict:
I definitely learned a bit during the day, although I did expect to get more personalized feedback than I did (maybe my expectations were a bit too high)... the morning instructor in particular didn't give me much personal feedback at all, even after I asked him where I could improve (the one interesting thing that he did tell me is that I seem to turn well when I turn right, but overdrive when I turn left... so I guess I need to work on my left turns). It's a little expensive at almost $300, but I guess given the fact that I had almost 20 runs, I can't complain.

I will consider attending again after I have a few years experience autocrossing.
