    2016 981 Cayman Nav & Apple CarPlay

Is anyone successfully using 5V 1A CarPlay USB Dongle for Navigation to upgrade the Porsche Nav to run Apple CarPlay with an iPhone as advertised on eBay? The seller claims it will work, but I have been unsuccessful in getting it to work.

Can you provide a link to the product? On the surface this sounds like it is unlikely to work - CarPlay is software that needs to run on your car’s infotainment computer. You can’t get CarPlay with a “dongle”.

It isn’t just a dongle. There is an app that you must download to you Porsche infotainment system via the USB port in the glove box. You get that from the QR code on the box. Here is the eBay address for the product. I have been a bit hesitant to do that without some independent confirmation that it works and is safe to do.

Interesting. This looks to be some sort of fake Chinese CarPlay application that is just somehow being cast on to the original Porsche system. I don’t think this has anything to do with CarPlay or is authorized by Apple at all.

With that being said it may work just fine and is a novel idea, however who knows what sort of spyware or malware is being downloaded onto our devices using Chinese hack stuff like this?

I know this may sound tinfoil hat, but who knows if this gives them access to the contents of your phone, text or even phone calls?

These dongles have been around for a while and work solely with Android headunits or tablets so will not work with Porsche PCM at all.

They are just an interface for the iPhone to run via the app on the android device.

That makes a lot more sense as the only way that I am aware of to get Apple CarPlay on the 981 platform is to completely replace the PCM unit with an aftermarket head unit

No there is a carplay module that fits the standard Porsche PCM or CDR+ (not base CDR).

I did read a post on Rennlist where a forum member has successfully installed CarPlay on his 981 GT4 I think it was. So it's doable for sure. As far as I could tell he was using the stock head unit just with some Chinese mods and soldering and all that.

There are a few 'mods' that are available to add Android Auto and Apple Airplay to the later PCM's, here is one example: https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto

And then there is this company that has a complete Android operating system running and displaying through the PCM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEgeg6MC-1g

Hmmm, I entered a 2016 Porsche Boxster in the compatibility check, it came back with "incompatible", also unless I missed it I see no reference to working with any Porsche PCM...
