    Steering Wheels

    Hi,

Can people answer is it possible to replace a standard 981 steering wheel and retro fit a multi function one?

Or even better is it possible to retro fit a 718 multi function wheel?

Yes I think is possible even though parts will tell you you can't I saw someone in youtube with the 718 steering wheel on a 981, of course its going to cost you an arm and a leg to buy it and get the dealer to install it for you.

    Re: Steering Wheels

I wouldn't think so, without it being extremely costly, since the electrical connections necessary for the "multi-function" aspect of the steering wheel to operate are not currently in place.

    Re: Steering Wheels

This is one of those things that is technically "possible" but practically "impossible" or at least not cost-effective(to the extreme). As has been stated in other threads, Porsche doesn't built a "one size fits all" wiring harness like most car manufacturers, each car's wiring is custom built for the specific options that car has. No MF wheel? Then no wiring harness to support the functions the buttons and wheels access. Sure, an electronics genius that is extremely anal could possibly run all the wiring necessary, but practically, it ain't happening. I installed a 718 type wheel on my 981 but my car came with the MF wheel, and all I had to do was swap wheels and install an adapter supplied by Li Paul and everything worked as original. Now you can easily install a non-MF 718 wheel on your car, no adapter or dealer visit necessary, but going the MF route isn't something you even want to contemplate. A much cheaper route would be to sell your car and buy one with the MF wheel installed.

    Re: Steering Wheels

    it is possible.
I have a macan multifunction wheel on my 981. there is a company that makes an adapter to connect. Problem is...I had sport wheel, and no sport chrono...meaning that I need a PIWIS code to program the mulitfunction support.
the wheel looks great, multifunction not working (currently). It was not cheap...I bought the wheel, then airbag and adapter. As I understand....sportchrono does not need programming to go from Sport Wheel to multifunction. 981 multifunction to macan multifunction does not need programming either.
    FWIW, I have PDK

I have no idea if your situation can be rectified or not, but I suggest you email Li Paul directly and inquire of him if it can, he can work wonders with the Porsche architecture.

    Re: Steering Wheels

I also have a '14 981 Cayman S with PDK and Sport steering wheel. I am very interested in installing a multifunction steering wheel as well, whether it's from a Macan or 718/991.2. Do you know if it is possible to get the multifunction working properly? I have CDR-31, not PCM 3.1 (meaning no CarPlay), so it's such a pain not being able to skip songs (I have a Bluetooth aux jack adapter for my phone). Please let me know what company provided the adapter for the wheel.

    Re: Steering Wheels

I you don't have a multi-function wheel now it is either impossible or very costly to put a MF wheel on and have it work correctly. Sorry, but that' the way it is. The adapter I got was not to convert to MF, my car came with a MF wheel.

This is my understanding as well. I believe it’s based on the factory loom being semi-custom made specifically for each car to its exact spec and option set.

    Re: Steering Wheels

No, not costly. I did it for nothing. I picked up a macan wheel and the correct airbag with that wheel for 1k on ebay and sold my wheel and airbag for roughly the same. This is the adapter https://gpsadapter.us/blogs/installa...allation-guide you may need a reflash at the dealer after. Everything works just fine in my 2014 cayman s. You can read more on the install here https://www.planet-9.com/981-diy-dis...ement-diy.html

    Re: Steering Wheels

It seems that with the "Adapter-X" you can retrofit multifunction. Is this correct?

    Re: Steering Wheels

I was able to use all functions on the wheel. The scroll and clickable ball etc. Tell them what you have and what you are buying. Worked well for me and the others that had reported this before that I sought out.

    Good luck

I stand corrected, Li Paul is a genius.
