    need help with mod advice, really appreciated

    I have went through the many exhaust mods and other types but I honestly have some issues, mainly: [car is 2008 2.7 cayman 5 speed manual] No sport exhaust, No sport mode, No PASM, No chrono package.
    1.I would like to have an exhaust system that does not compromise cat converters and muffler (i hate drone) something that enhances performance and sound but character is more important than vol/db. I do not like the idea of being exposed to fumes that many ppl told me heard of other's experiences with removing cats.
    2.the other many mods seems useful/needed with an exhaust. Specifically flashing the ECU with a new programming set up (the reason I became skeptical of this is because of how much "real" testing was done. I really do not want to do harm (for those who have some background in pc culture i do not overcloock for very similar reasons)
    3.other mods so far seem to include, but are not limited to: manifold, headers, IPD plenum, snorking, under drive pully.
    4.weight reduction options seem to be mostly focused on clutch parts but I have heard single flywheels have some "balance" harm that damages certain part of the transmission due to it not having the same front and rear weight/balance or something on this forum a while back.
    5.suspension recommendations? something easy to install I am very very basic DIY guy and the shops here cost a fortune with little to no experience or work integrity (I found an expensive set of cayman R suspensions on Suncoasticon $$$) handling ability and fun, being easy to install without drilling 60 holes and destroying the car
    6.the car was bought recently and I looked for a while for "1 time fixes" and preventative maintenance/changes. Thus far I have found I should find a superior air/oil separator from a different model because this OEM can leak oil into air. other one is Apparently you need to add a bigger oil sump or pump due to the high G high RPM scenario. I also have no xp with oil catch cans but could they improve stuff?
    I have seen multiple websites that offer programming with claims of more horses and torque for less gallons per miles (not saying impossible but a man has his doubts) like Softronicicon's and others which are quiet expensive for 1 time flash and many online review on other brands for other cars proved on dynos it was BS [not same companies or car

    Abdullah-thanks for your post.

    This is like 6 different questions all rolled into one dialog. Exhaust would be one of the easiest modifications you can do your self. The suspension is more complicated, especially the rear suspension. I have Ohlin coilovers and think they work very well. They deffinately are a upgrade from the R springs you were mentioning above. Long tube cat headers from Soul would be a great addition or Cargraphic Headers, which ever one you can easily import would work.

    As far as deep sump oil protection goes, LN makes an excellant deep sump with a windage plate to keep the oil from sloshing up the sides of the sump in long high g corners causing oil starvation and scarring to #6 rod bearing. If you do not drive your car in a manor that would require the deep sump, no high G turns, then you can spend your modification money on other items that will bring you joy and satisfaction from your Cayman.

    One modification that you could do to prevent roadside failure is a Numeric steel shifter cable install. The OEM cables could break without any notification, leaving you stranded. So as an insurance for this not happening to you, is to have these cables installed on your car. I would also add that Numeric short shifter is an excellant shifter. You can do rolling downshifts into first gear, even at 20 mph. This shifter system really transforms the manual transmission into a form of art, either up shifting or down shifting. A Numeric rubber insulation hose is also available and reduces the NVH tranmission whine through the steel cables to a non event.

    1. Only you can judge what might be too loud or have too much drone. My suggestion is to find some local people that have different exhaust setups and ask if they would take you for a ride. What sounds perfect with little drone to one person might be unbearable by your standards.

    2+3+6. ECU tuning has been common practice for over 20 years. We're not in the days of slapping a chip onto a car and tweaking parameters to an extreme. Go with a known company and the tune is perfectly safe.
    Personally, I think tuning these cars is a waste of money. On turbo cars, simply adjusting TCV timing and optimizing for a specific type of fuel can instantly get you +50whp and +30ftlbs. That's the best bang for your buck. But spending upwards of $700 for a tune that only adds maybe 10hp is a hard pill to swallow. Porsche did a fairly good job of squeezing as much power as they could out of these NA motors.

    Bolt on parts increase flow and will improve performance. Remember that if you upgrade on one side of the engine, you need to upgrade on the other to see maximum gains. A high flow exhaust sounds great, but you won't see it's full potential without upgrades on the intake side of things.
    Also keep in mind that while most of the tuning companies will say you can get additional horsepower with their Stage 3 tune, that tune requires that you have the associated bolt ons. If you dynoed with a stock tune and the same bolt ons, you'd realize that the software was still only gaining you about 15hp at most.

    The only time I would consider a tune was if you plan to run catless, it's the easy way to prevent a CEL. But with your intention of keeping a cat, it seems pointless.

    Having built many cars, the tires, brakes, and driver mods are the best upgrades. My friend has a 981S with every bolt on in the book and tuned. I have a 987S with a home built exhaust and underdrive pulley. Side by side, he can't even put a gap between us up to 100mph. Parts definitely make improvements on these cars, I'm not discounting that. But having spent tens of thousands to build other cars, I opted to keep this 987's engine mostly stock and so far, I'm not regretting it. Handling alone is what makes it one of the fastest cars on the track.

    Part of software tuning is optimizing for a specific fuel type. That alone can improve your fuel economy while getting you more performance. Porsche strongly suggests premium fuel, but that can be as low as 91 octane in many regions, so these cars are dumbed down a bit to avoid knock.

    A deep sump and upgraded air oil separator are good upgrades for the track. But if you're just enjoying some spirited driving and mostly cruising, I wouldn't be stressed about these.

    4. Weight reduction is subjective. Are you building a track car? Strip it all out. I've pulled out things that I don't use, like the radio, speakers, stock seats, etc. Every pound saved can help. But even stripping out everything in these cars and swapping in light weight bucket seats will only save you between 100-200lbs depending on what options the car has. 100lbs makes a huge difference at a professional driving level, but just one poorly timed shift can negate that savings. It's not like these cars are super heavy to begin with.

    5. Not sure why you'd be drilling holes to install any suspension that is engineered for these car. If you like OEM, stick with a Porsche option. If you don't mind aftermarket, there are some great spring and strut combinations that you can make. If you want to adjust everything, go with coilovers. Like #1, install difficulty is entirely based upon your experience and skill level. It took me 4 hours to do my first Boxster suspension swap (all four corners and tie rods), it took me 2 hours on my second Boxster suspension. Years ago, the very first suspension I ever installed took me close to 12 hours.

    I don't mean to sound negative, but if you want more performance, sell your car and buy an S. With a 2.7, the best thing you can do is improve the suspension and just enjoy it.
    I've built Volvos that can outrun my 987S, but the Porsche is purely for the fun driving experience. There will always be faster cars. Don't waste your money turning your car into something that will still fall short of a bone stock configuration that Porsche already offers.

    Adding on - and doing the return on investment. Putting the level of money and time into this car will give limited results. It's a great car to begin with, for what it is (and with the exception of very few of us - more handling and performance then we will ever need). If the suspension is starting to loosen up, replace the parts staying with the stock design, but using newer parts. Horsepower increases very rarely make a car faster, brakes and suspension do.

    From having modified several cars in my past - modest changes give the biggest results. If you're looking to significantly improve lap times on a track put the money into the most easily modified part of the car - the driver (or the loose nut behind the steering wheel!). Driving schools are a blast and a smart investment.

    For exhausts, I have a Soul Performance exhaust and headers. They make both components including high-flow cat headers. No drone, tame sound when driving around town, really comes alive when you punch it. Go search for Boost Brothers Garage video where they install the exhaust on their Cayman.

    Without doing some kind of bolt-on supercharger or turbocharger you are not going to get much improvement HP wise. You will spend $2k - $3k for intake, exhaust, and tune changes to get maybe 20HP. I resorted to an engine swap.

    I have a PASM suspension and added a DSC control module - makes a huge difference in handling. If you don't have PASM, then look at coilovers. Apex1 has done a lot of work in this area for his autox car. Suspension is where you may get a bigger bang for your buck. But then again, these cars are very well balanced and set up pretty well from the factory. Look at your goals and be very clear what you are trying to gain as it is always a compromise.

    I wouldn't worry about a deep sump oil pan or motorsport AOS unless you are going to do a lot of all-out racing or a lot of DE days. For spirited canyon carving and twisties you should be fine.

    Just chiming I’m on the headers option. I have Fabspeedicon catless headers. The sound is great, no drone, not loud either. It’s not boomy and definitively Porsche. I don’t smell any exhaust fumes. I’ve had cars in the past that you could. I occasionally sit in traffic too.
