That is exactly the point of this opinion article. WHY TESLA'S 'PLAID' POWERTRAIN IS A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TOWARDS PORSCHE

Porsche was getting too much automotive press. Tesla fading into the background. Mr. Musk had to do something drastic. Bring a prototype out, which is meaningless in the sense of run what you sell, and talk about what they "can" do rather than what they did do with actual production models.

"Tesla was desperate to get their customers back from Porsche. ... For Tesla, it would have definitely been frustrating to lose all the market attention they have been receiving",

    But then it gets worse

"Laguna Seca’s officials claimed that Tesla’s run in Laguna Seca will not be an official record. ... We were not officiating while the Tesla was testing on the track. Official records only happen during sanctioned events where a sanctioning body is officiating.”

Oops. If you are going to run with the big boys, at least know the rules.

This article is an excellent summary and is how Porsche views Tesla’s recent testing:

It is a good article. Free PR. Here's the real issue

"if Tesla does release a production vehicle that outdoes the Taycan’s lap, Porsche will respond" This is consistent with what R&T reported: "
the blue Tesla prototype ran a 7:40 lap—our source believes the car may have had a mechanical problem, or the driver may have made an error somewhere,... The red Tesla prototype completed one lap in 7:23"

Once the PR wars are over and an actual production vehicle has an official number, you know Porsche will respond. Until then, its chasing nothing because nothing is real. And it will be repeatable. Just like Porsche touted a 911 Turbo S doing 50 launches in a row no sweat, you can be sure the Taycan will be able to run the laps until the electrons are empty. I doubt Porsche intends to lose this "battle". Meanwhile it does get free PR.
