    Question 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

I didn't see any threads already discussing this, so forgive me if I overlooked one.

The next Toyota Supra (co-developed with BMW) is almost here, and more and more I'm seeing information stating that Toyota benchmarked Porsche sports cars again. (The GT86/FRS/BRZ handling benchmark was the Cayman). Based on comments from engineers here is what we know.

    Vehicle weight: roughly 1450 kg
    Engine hp: 262/335 (2.0 liter 4, 3.0 liter 6)
    Engine Torque: 400 lb-ft
    Transmission: 8sp automatic ()
    Wheelbase: < 100 inches
    Price: unknown

Where things get interesting is that people close to the inside (or involved directly) have said the Cayman's performance was again the project benchmark. Additionally, some claim that the new Supra outperforms the Porsche 911S. Personally, I don't believe that for one second. I don't even think the new Supra will outperform the 718, base or otherwise. Only way I can possibly see that happening is if Toyota is sandbagging and the Supra's weight is sub 3000 lb.

Anyone want to take odds on that actually happening?

Surprised nobody has replied to this post.

The new Supra looks excellent. I hope it and the new Corvette with the mid engine design give Porsche a run for their money.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

You know how, when 80 years or so pass since you were last bombed out of existence and kids had to walk 6+ miles in snow and sweltering heat to go to school, often barefoot, the people who have never lived that and have forgotten all of the stories from elders come out of the woodwork and want to outlaw roads out of existence because they are allegedly dangerous, dirty and just plain uncool?

See, the same thing happens in parallel with sports cars. Since, because of the above mentioned people, you cannot really drive a sports car almost anywhere on the planet anymore, the only reason to buy it becomes specs bar fight. Numbers.

When sports car was first popularized (after WWII), it was pretty obvious that it was utterly useless object whose only purpose was to provide emotions while the owner was driving it. Not steering it. Not having specs bar fight. Driving it. Very, very few really cared how fast it was and what lap time it will turn on Nuerburgring. Yes, admittedly, hp was the thing even then so they used to have more of it than family cars, just like they do today. But people were drawn to it more for the experience than for sheer speed for a simple reason that they actually COULD experience it without going to a crackhouse a.k.a. "racetrack".

So, what Supra has in numbers I couldn't care less. Nor how fast it is. I am perfectly comfortable being passed by BRZ/FRS on the track while enjoying my Cayman on the same track. Until I drive it (and I probably never will if I am allowed to keep my 981), I have very little to say about it.

The last vehicle I drove that blew my mind away? Nissan Leaf. That's how powerful is the unexpected. While it can go move-by-move with my Cayman driven by a mentally sane person on a twisty public road, what it can do in traffic, my Cayman can only dream of.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

The Supra isn't going to win any numbers game with that, unless the price is sub-40K. It's barely competitive with the 370Z, which is $30K and designed a decade ago. I'd have to drive it to be impressed by it, because I think the numbers game is pointless anyway. Anything much over 300hp is unusable on the street, at least if you want to keep your license.

some claim that the new Supra outperforms the Porsche 911S.
3190 lbs, 335 HP? Sure. That's going to happen. Is this fake news?

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

Supra's head engineer (Tada) now claiming that the Supra's target is (was?) the Cayman S. Strange how he changed his tune (previously said 911S). Either way I think the Supra is outclassed.

And it's quite unfortunate that a manual is not available. More and more, I think that BMW just vetoed that option.

Anyway, the press embargo (for driving the car) was lifted today. So reviews galore.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

Reviews generally good. Not my cup of tea without a stick. However, I bet it sells quite well at that price point. Time will tell whether the reliability is that of Toyota or BMW. Unfortunately for consumers it will likely be that of BMW despite Toyota’s tweaking of the engine.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

Looks like Toyota has a winner in the stable. Yes, a manual gearbox would be nice, but even with the slushbox that's a pretty potent, well-priced machine.

Don't think you'll see any 718 owners trading their cars for a Toyota. If Toyota wants to compete with Porsche, they should badge the car as a Lexus, and provide a Lexus quality interior.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

As another performance car in the garage, fulfilling a different purpose than a pure sports car like a Cayman/Boxster, the Supra could find its niche. I just bought an AMG C43 to do backup duty to the Cayman; had the Supra been available in February it would have been a contender for the parking spot (although the C43 gets bonus points for being a rear-biased AWD).

    2019 A90 Toyota Supra

I have a lot of Supra love. My first car was a Supra in 1986’ish. It was awesome and they evolved beautifully, the Japanese Porsche, ready for mods. I’m very curious to see one in person.

    Re: 2019 A90 Toyota Supra

I love the new Supra. I really want one. In red.

I have a feeling TOyota will have a hotter version coming. I have a feeling aftermarket mods will be available aplenty in a little bit. I would love to own one as my daily driver.
