    Re: Thoughts on Forum Changes

vBulletin 5 should be out. The functionality and workflow provided show that design decisions after the sale of vbulletin are now in the hands of people who do not use forum software actively (aka eagle style browsing only).

XenForo is what some forums I use switched to. I have a few nitpicks and I don't think it is close to the utility of vBulletin 3 with some extensions. But the important part here is that Xenforo is still making changes to make the software better. Something that very much cannot be said about the new vBulletin owners.

P.S. I joined this forums specifically because it is one of the few remaining car forums that is not controlled by a larger entity and (more importantly) is still moderated by what is a forum member, not some office full of mods doing a million forum's moderation flatrate style.

    Re: Thoughts on Forum Changes

I'm open to change providing you can preserve the 'feel' or general atmosphere of the site. As mentioned it can be tricky to do when changing. It has slipped a bit from years back when I joined but still is better than most. Still a much friendlier atmosphere than some ice visited. I found most amusing the ones that rated the value of a post on the number you've made as opposed to the content.

The other thing is preserving the content. One of the values is being able to search out an old bit of info on the older cars. One could always repost the question but as say the 987/997 pass out of general memory there may not be an answer. The current models will always have the most traffic. I'd book marked some of these with thread subscriptions which have gone away. Hopefully the info is still there instead of deleted.

I'm with dud. Having the mods as members helps a lot in maintaining what you have.

While I may not comprehend the technical issues involved, my instincts tell me that option 3 is the way to go as long as the history can be preserved and transferred over.

An interesting factlet is that Xenoforo can convert vBulletin 4 forums but not vBulletin 5. (last I checked)

    vb5 is poison.

We are not going to VB5 as there is no compelling reason to do so, we'd lose compatibility to some of our VB4 add-ons and custom work would have to be re-done again at $$$$. For now I think we are sticking with VB4 and continuing to enhance what we have, for example making mobile apps for Android and iPhone, etc.

Dud you are correct this is one of the last large forums NOT to sell out to the firms that buy forums. I've been approached to sell and much like Shark Tank I've told them that I am willing to take on an investor/partner but I don't have any interest in selling outright. They don't seem to understand that model, they just want to cookie-cutter everything.

Good move. The cookie-cutter approach is much like badge engineering. Bland and dull sameness.

    Re: Thoughts on Forum Changes

Coming in late, but Option #3 certainly seems to be the way to go. Pull the band-aid off quickly and get on with things, as it were.

I will echo a comment above noting it would be very nice for those of us with 986/987 models if the move does not delete thread subscriptions, articles, etc. The hard-earned "old school" knowledge located in those places is very valuable!

In the end, do what you think is best for you and the site, Ken, and the users will adjust if the choice is correct!
