If anyone with a 2006-2008 CS Tip changes their gauge faces, I'd be interested in your OEM white gauge face. PM me with interest.

Re: Face Off! FVD Announces Instrument Cluster Gauge Face Sale!

I see in the last issues of Porsche Panorama (Jan/Feb 2011) an article on installing an updated gauge cluster as part of a Boxster 2.7 to 3.4 liter conversion. From the photo's accompanying the article, apparently the Boxster/Cayman instrument cluster has the two additional cut outs for the 911 package spots for an analog style Oil Temp and Oil Pressure gauges.

Is there a thread on this in the Planet 9 archives; or can FVD's upgrade be adapted to incorporate & accomodate this kind of an upgrade?

STOP! This applies to 986 ONLY!

There is NO WAY to do this on a 987, that additional blanks/spots are NOT there, and even if you bought a 997 5 gauge cluster it would NOT fit into a 987 dash. I've been down this road already. Additionally there is NO oil pressure sending unit in our engines, only oil temp. I don't know about 986's if they had oil pressure sending units or not. If not, that guy in Pano is going to have a dead gauge unless he installs an oil pressure sending unit.

Unfortunately the guy in Panorama didn't go into this level of detail, but happy to provide the full explanation here on Planet-9!

Re: Face Off! FVD Announces Instrument Cluster Gauge Face Sale!

Well that's sad. Hard to believe Porsche wouldn't have some kind of oil pressure monitoring system, even if it only ran an idiot light on the dash, for the Cayman.

So I take it, even the Durametric software scan tool system can't pull or check oil pressure on the Caymans? We're down to oil temperature readings only? Wow.

I checked that with Scott of Softronicicon and that's the case, without the oil pressure sending unit there is only oil temperature available and the idiot light for oil pressure below a certain level, but nothing that sends oil pressure in readings that can be taken and diplayed and if you get the oil sending unit from say a 997 you won't have the wiring harness piece needed to carry the info to the ECU and you'll have to rig something there as well. In other words NOT an easy task...

    +1

But $504 is a lot for gauges... kind of agree on the Porsche tax for this one. At $300 I would do it in a heartbeat.

Great thread guys! I own an 07 2.7 Cayman Base; I too would be interested in
buying an OEM white face plate from someone who is doing
    the face plate update.

    Hi Guys (and Rhonda),

Are the guards red gauges for the instrument panel and sport chrono available for the 2009 Boxster S yet? The look great!

    Thanks,
    Eddie

Re: Face Off! FVD Announces Instrument Cluster Gauge Face Sale!

Has anyone had this done this at the Dealer? I already have the cluster disassembled and tried pulling the Needles out but they are on there pretty tight. I am worried that I might break something. Any other tricks other than what K-Man has already explained in his article?

    Thanks.

What I would say is- Trust yourself! The article is very detailed and I was able to do this successfully without any issue. I would consider myself a 5 on 1-10 scale for technical expertise and was able to complete the task relatively quickly. I know it is a daunting task, but you can do it!

I have gotten past getting the Needles off and now struggling with the black pressed down rings. I have cut them but I am not able to get them out. Is it just a slit on both sides or do I have to cut a channel (meaning removing a little chunk) on both sides? If I have to cut a channel, how do they look once the new gauge is put in and the needles are back on. Can the gaps be seen?

Re: Face Off! FVD Announces Instrument Cluster Gauge Face Sale!

I used an xacto knife to do most of the work on the small black rings. Once I made the cut- only a cut is needed, there is no reason to take a channel out- i used the knife to pry them out of the center. It should be somewhat easy to do it with the tool. make sure that you don't lose it if it happens to pop out quickly! When you're ready to place them back in they should just snap into place.

I have some pictures with some comments on the observations I have made. (I have included the front and back pictures of the Factory Gauge as well)
I have not test fitted it in the car to see how it will look. So no idea how it will look once illuminated and in the daytime as well.

I would like see how it looks once illuminated. Is it ok to plug it into connector and turn the ignition on with the cluster disassembled and needles removed (steering was not removed)?

Also tell me what you guys think about the gauge itself.

    Thanks.
I'd say you get what you pay for, of course there will be cheaper knock-offs out there but as your pictures point out, the set you bought is missing things and isn't made the same way or to the same specifications. Is it really worth a couple hundred dollars to mess up your gauge cluster? As for turning on the gauges without the needles inserted just to see what it looks like illuminated I would suspect that would be "ok" provided that the needle mechanisms will return to the same spot in the off position so you can re-insert the needles and have them be at the correct location. As I found out those needle assemblies are sensitive and I wouldn't want to take off and re-attach the needles any more than necessary either. Best of luck, and if you can, take a picture of the factory illuminated face and the aftermarket illuminated face for comparison purposes and show that here as well.

Unfortunately these were only guys I could find that made the gauge in blue.

What about an offsetting color like yellow? I've see Blue Porsche's with yellow accents that look great because the colors compliment each other well...

Re: Face Off! FVD Announces Instrument Cluster Gauge Face Sale!

since you are asking for opinions: it seems to me that the designer of this product chose a poor typeface for this particular application and/or set the letter-kerning too tight - or the printer had some problems producing the item - because many of the letters and numerals, and even some of the hash-marks, appear to be 'bleeding' into each other and the printed edges of these forms are not sufficiently crisp.

no offense to anyone intended, but i would not purchase this product.
