How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

Finally purchased a house with a garage. Since a good quality indoor cover isnít cheap, trying to justify the purchase.
What are some reasons and benefits to keeping car covered when home garage parked?

Re: How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

I use my cover if I'm not going to drive the car for a while. I have a 3 car garage and the third car garage is my wood shop. If the weather is bad and I need to work in the shop the car is covered. I purchased a very good cover that keeps all of the dust off of the car.I was very pleased when I took the cover off after working in the shop to find virtually no dust on the car. Now just yesterday we finally had some sun and a 50 degree day so I took her off of the maintainer and had an amazing drive. I always cover my car when not in use for a while.

Didn’t think about preventing dust created by other possible work being done inside garage, good tip, thx!
It’s been too cold and wet in Washington DC area for too long but finally going up to low 60s today, will be taking mine out for a spin with top down.

Re: How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

I've done the car dust cover routine in my garage and found it more trouble than it was worth. If you've just cleaned the car and put the cover on, fine. But as soon as you drive it, regardless of how far, the road and tree dust will get on the car and putting on/taking off a cover drags the dust around with possible paint scuffing. So I stopped using it. It just wasn't worth the effort and damage risk. Now a work shop in the same garage is a different issue.

Well, I'm kind of crazy because after I drive my car I clean and detail it and then cover it. Just about every time unless I'm going out the next day. But if it is going to be a while I detail and then cover... yes I know I'm a bit nuts but I love my car.

If you're leaving a car in the garage for a couple of weeks it might make sense to cover it, but any dust that would be deposited overnight would be minimal. Where I live there's a TON more dust outside...park for a hour or two and it's visible when you come back. Don't see much point covering a daily driver in a garage.

Re: How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

My garage has an exhaust fan in the roof which allows some weather in during strong storms. This meanings the car gets messy. Also bugs like to die on the car.
Therefore I got a pretty cheap $36 cover on eBay. Happy with it for this purpose. It's might not be a super cover and it's not priced like one but it does the job.

Re: How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

I had a 99 Boxster until 2 years ago and kept it covered in the garage with a Porsche cover, traded it for a 2014 Boxster and the original cover didn't fit so I purchased a nice light weight bed comforter from Boscovs and now cover my car with that, I just roll it up front to back and take it off and do the reverse when I get home. I have two Audi's too, the 2017 also stays in the garage and has two king size comforters covering it, lengthwise. The only reason I cover them is because we have and indoor cat and he loves to go in the garage and walk all over the cars leaving footprints, then sit on the window sills watching the world go by!!

Re: How important is a car cover when car is home garage parked?

If you have rodents, don't use a cover. I learned this myself one March day. About two weeks after parking and covering my 2015 Cayman in my detached and unheated garage, I removed the car cover to find an equally startled mother mouse nursing three raw red babies on my rear spoiler. I jumped back, the mother scrambled, the babies went flying, and I left the garage with the cover in-hand. When I returned hours later there was no sign of the mice, and never since then either, as I no longer use a cover.

This idea should help discourage mice from nesting in your car. I put moth balls in a container once used for an air freshener, on the ground, under the front & back of my "15 Cayman. I also use solid poison blocks next to the overhead door tracks which also works to keep the mice away. The previous owner didn't & when I replaced the pre filter near the battery, I saw nest material under the battery & removed enough to fill half a soccer ball. No critters were harmed.
