    2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

Looking for my first Cayman. My requirement is a manual transmission and prefer white exterior.

There are currently 11 CPO for 981 with manual. Here is the one with lowest price and fits my req:
    https://nationalpreownedporsche.com/...+White+2003187

Auto check states there are two prior owners and no accidents. rated at 88, but not sure what it means.

    Some q for the community:
-any red flag based on the details from dealer?
-There is no maintenance record at dealer based on auto check history?
-what further info shall I request for from dealer?
-how much discount will dealer accept on typical CPO?
-any repair/maintenance cost I expect right after I got this?
-Does CPO offer financing? planning to put half down and half finance. Credit is over 800.

**I see rust on the disk brake, concerns? attached.

    TIA!

It appears it was a leased vehicle. With the stick, you must have the dealer run a DME report to check for overruns of the engine. He will give you a report that will indicate the number of overruns in each RPM range. You will need to do a little web searching to decipher the results for the cayman. I can try to dig up some stuff when I was looking. Looks like the car spent its life in Austin. Ask the dealer for service records. He should be able to get them from another dealership if necessary.

Getting an overrun report is never a bad idea, but it is my understanding that Porsche will not CPO a car that has an unsatisfactory report.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

The dealership should have already run the DME report and it should have passed in order to CPO the car, but you should ask them for it anyway. (Looks like Steve beat me to the punch.)

Find out if it has 2 keys. I don't see a 2nd key in any of the pics. Those keys cost $500 to make. CPO should mean it comes with 2 keys.
Tires should be good in order to pass CPO, but just remember when cars get close to 30K mi they may be due for a set of tires.
The rust on the rotor is just from washing the car and then taking a pic immediately afterwards. The rust will quickly scrape off the 1st time you hit the brakes.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

CPO status isn't an ironclad guarantee that the items supposed to be checked/verified actually were. (There have been reports over the years here of CPO cars that weren't up to snuff.) If I were buying a CPO car, I would personally verify as many items on the checklist as possible. A quick visual inspection will reveal if tires are N-spec and obviously within wear guidelines. Ditto for brake rotors and pads. If a manual gearbox, I'd insist on seeing DME report to check over-revs, and I'd cross-check that against the VIN and confirm that the report was pulled at the car's current mileage (if it's for sale and folks are test driving, additional over-revs are possible). A thorough road test will also reveal if some other items supposed to have been verified as operational actually are. As Ronald Reagan famously said: trust but verify.

    Here's the checklist.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

CPO costs the dealer, so donít expect a discount on that portion. I donít know the US charge, but it was $3800CAD. This is above whatever remediation was needed.

Ask when the CPO was purchased. If it was bought when the car was new, the dealer may not have done any inspection.

I donít think CPO has an effect on financing, other than adding to the cost financed.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

    -I see no red flags
-The dealer should be able to supply you with the maintenance/inspection record that they performed in order to bring the car to CPO status. This will not only show you what the CPO pass/fail criteria was but also how this car measured up. Auto check usually identifies where the car was first sold and put into service. I personally went to that dealer on my CPO and asked for the service record. They balked claiming customer privacy policy. After some begging and suggesting they could redact all personal information they did in the end provide the service records full redacted for customer info.
-Personally I trust CPO process however as they say "trust but verify". So for all claims by the dealer ask for paper proof of same.
-As to offer it really depends on location and competition. Go low and work your way up.
-You can check the date and milage for the next service right on the car. If you don't know how to do this ask the dealer to show you on the info screen.
-Many dealers offer the same financing options on CPOs as on their new cars. With your credit score this should not be an issue.
-Disks on disk brakes are typically soft iron. They get hot in use and they get damp sitting. So they rust. This is not an issue.
    Good Luck!

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

    1) So got the DME report and reviewing the over-revs.... I see only range1 with over-rev on this report on Pg6 of the PDF. (attached). safe to say we can check this off?

    2) Service records indicate 4yr/40k service was done recently. so thats checked off. There is a line states "Loaner Car" on 11/30/17. I hope that does NOT mean the car was used as a loaner... verifying with dealer. (image attached)

    3) Some people suggest hire mechanic to do PPI... is it a must on a CPO? If so, where to hire one? The car is in Houston, and I am in South California.

This forum has been very helpful! many many thanks you guys!

The loaner car line is almost certainly a reference to a car to be provided to the owner of your prospective car when he/she brought it in for service. A similar reference is on some of my invoices. I cannot imagine a dealership providing a manual sports car as a loaner. They usually give me a base Cayenne or Macan.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

No issues with over-revs on the car. With a CPO car you have a full Porsche warranty, so almost anything mechanical that goes wrong with the car would be repaired at no cost. For most people, this is assurance enough. Having a PPI done by an independent Porsche specialist may uncover issues that the CPO process doesn’t address (e.g. cosmetic issues such as slightly mismatched paint from a panel respray) but generally anything mechanical a PPI uncovers would be covered under warranty. One specific exception would be wear items like brakes and tires and clutch. The CPO process has minimum wear levels on brakes and tires that can be verified, but clutch just gets a pass fail. If there’s any slippage at all in the clutch it may be a negotiating point with the dealer.

Personally I would not waste my money on a PPI for a CPO car unless your dealer has a reputation of misdeeds.

Re: 2015 Cayman CPO advice pls

Personally Iíd get a PPI done as your potentially buying a car that Iím assuming you have not seen.

Itís probably cheaper to get a PPI done that to fly out from SoCal to Austin and inspect the car yourself.

Also, I believe that DME was run almost 6 months ago so if youíre inclined to get another PPI Iíd have them run another DME.

Good luck as Caymans are really fun cars.
