    Chatter-free tires!

This has probably been posted before, but I just have to say how amazed and pleased I am with the Michelin PS4S tires. Just had them installed on 20 inch HRE FF01 wheels a few weeks ago. Weather has been cold and somewhat snowy here, so haven't driven them more than 30 miles or so. After heavy rain yesterday that cleared the road salt, took the car for a short drive today. Initial impressions of ride and handling are really good on both fronts. Need more miles to fully test, but I see no reason to doubt the rave reviews they have received.

One thing I can say for sure, there is none of the ridiculous chattering, skipping, etc. that I’ve lived with for the past 4+ years with the P Zero’s. It was about 32 degrees here today, and I backed out of the garage, did a full turn of the wheel as I swung out of the driveway, and nothing! The P Zero’s would chatter like crazy. This may seem like a small thing, but to me it is a serious plus with these tires. Just thought I’d share

I have the PS4S on my 20 inch wheels and I did notice that the car no longer does that Ackerman thing when making slow tight radius turns in the cold. Which makes me wonder is it because the tire is just slipping?

yeah, I really don't know. But if it does it with one tire and not another, I have to conclude it's the tire and not the car.

Oh, it's definitely the tires. Your new tires are more pliable in cold temperatures than the old, and able to deform under the Ackerman stress without chattering. Some of this is the compound is more pliable at colder temperatures, some of it is because they're new, not heat-cycled, and have tall squishy tread blocks that haven't worn down yet. Drive in colder temps in 5 years when they're bald and the rubber has aged and heat cycled, and you're likely to feel chattering again.

That said, anectodally, I rarely felt chattering on RE-71Rs or Dunlop ZII, either, two summer tires that are known to work well in cooler temperatures. I did get a little bit of chattering the other morning on my nearly-bald and heat-cycled RE-71Rs last week when it was 7F out (and I had just left my 40F garage), but I can't remember ever feeling these tires do that before.

Well I will certainly be replacing my worn and cracking PZeros with PS4S this Summer. Have had to suffer with Ackerman skipping from day 1 in a new car with new tyres and still as bad now with worn tyres. I am certainly ready to try something else!

yeah, certainly agree with sjfehr that age and heat cycles have probably exacerbated the problem, but mine too have been doing the dance since day 1!
