Do 20" Rims Have Many Flat Tires Due to Road Hazards-Pot Holes, Etc?

I am ordering a new Porsche Targa that will be used mainly for touring around the United States and have some concerns regarding Flat Tires due to road hazards. I currently have 18" rims on my Cayman, and over 60K miles have not encountered any issues (knock on wood) - Trips to Canada, Vermont, Texas, Indiana, North Carolina, etc., so lots of places with various road conditions.

Thus I would like to hear from Forum members that have 20" rims, if you have or have not experienced any flat tires due to road hazards over how many miles and types of trips/road conditions.

Thanks in advance for your input.

20" tires on the Boxster(s) since my MY13 no issues with flats, but I see no reason these should be any more susceptible than other sizes, the starting tread depths are about the same no matter the tire, I think it is more a matter of 'bad' luck to get a flat.

Having said this it is astonishing the amount a puncture inducing debris you see on the road these days, not blaming the average pick-up but it seems nobody cares what is bouncing around back there or on flat decks and it ends up on the road at some point!

Not quite on subject but one of my biggest peeve's is gravel/rocks on flat beds, dumps and rear bumpers, the stuff flies at every bump and turn, the windshield get hammered!

Re: Do 20" Rims Have Many Flat Tires Due to Road Hazards-Pot Holes, Etc?

I assume that the OP is concerned with potential effects due to the shorter sidewall in 20's. I have 20's for summer tires use 18's for winter, due to concerns with potholes. Most of the 53,000 km on my car was done using the 20's, with no issues save one. I hit a sizeable chunk of metal that blew both left side tires and dented both wheels. The dealer managed to hammer out the dents and save the wheels. It is possible that 18's would have lessened or prevented the wheel damage, but who knows? It was a pretty catastrophic hit and fortunately a low probability event.

I wouldn't worry, unless you do a lot of off-roading.

Thanks Ottawa and West, Yes my question is more related to Sidewall damage or Rim damage due to potholes, not punctures.

Gotcha' no wheel or sidewall damage either. I will say that the overall ride quality is much better with the 18" tires though!

Never an issue on ours and we've had it for over 5 years and 45K miles. I did, however, have such a problem with a car that had 17's one time.
