Anybody? I figure maybe a winter tire or dirt tire guy may have tried this already.

If you have done it please post.

An early 986 wheel of 16” should work, but I’ve never heard of a 15” being used.

Why would you want that?

Why wouldn't you want more sidewall for winter or dirt.. Maybe I can borrow a 986 16" from somebody to test fit.

I guess I could just get 17" tires with a larger sidewall but then you get in to all the issues with overall diameter increasing.

I'm not sure 16" wheels would fit around the brakes. The smallest wheels that came on 987 cars is 17" IIRC.

Gotcha yes, reason I'd want to borrow a single to test before I commit to buying a set of 16's. Sometimes aftermarket wheels have more brake clearance than OE wheels. That is another consideration.
