What was the mode of failure for the engine?

Re: 2005 Boxster S (Blown Engine)

The connecting rod broke hit the engine block causing engine failure. I had a Porsche specialist look at the engine and he believes this was due to an error with the shop who did an oil change and didn't change the filter.

Here's the diagnosis.

After the diagnosis I hired a Porsche specialist and here's what the specialist said after he went to the shop:

Hey BJ,

Here is my assumption on how the engine blew up. I visually inspected the engine at a Bronx auto repair shop. The engine was completely disassembled when i arrived. 1st thing I looked at was to see if the intermediate shaft was intact and the bearing was ok, it was. I then looked at the pistons, conrods and crank. If I remember correctly cylinder #3 crank/conrod journal had signs of excessive heat. Found tbe bearing completely gone. Being a technician for 14 years i think the bearing surface was starved from oil from either over revving the engine, high cornering g-forces or low oil pressure. The connecting rod started to move up and down which in turn brought the piston closer and touched the valves.
A few weeks after I inspected the car you told me that they did an oil change but didnt change the oil filter. If the oil filter was clogged from old oil and the filter material broke down the engine would lose oil pressure and cause the bearing to fail from oil starvation.

Re: 2005 Boxster S (Blown Engine)

What would this Boxster S be worth with my 325 hp 3.4L DFI Cayman S engine, a 2014 model with 2900 miles on it, transplanted along with ECU by a reputable shop?

I'm thinking about a 3.8L transplant in mine, but not excited about giving mine up for a $6k core charge.

Given you would have to rip out the entire body harness, likely expensive. You can look up '05 Boxster S on eBay or Carmax. Unclear if any premium....
