2015 919s pay tribute to classic Porsche Le Mans cars

Each 919 is an homage to Porsche's historic relationship with the most famous endurance race in the world. The red, black, and white liveries each represent a particular aspect of the company's racing heritage.

1970 Porsche 917

The red car is inspired by the 1970 Porsche 917 KH short-tail, which won the race 45 years ago.

1971 Porsche 917 KH

The white one was also used on this No. 22 917 KH, which won the 1971 running of Le Mans. Earl Bamber, Nico Hulkenberg, and Nick Tandy will drive the No. 19 car this year.

Porsche 918 Spyder Nurburgring Record Car

The black car is a tribute to the Porsche 918 Spyder that set a Nurburgring "record" of 06:57 in 2013 with Marc Lieb at the wheel.

1951 Porsche 356 SL 1100

The very first Porsche at Le Mans had no livery at all, interestingly enough. The 356 SL 1100 of 1951 had a bare aluminum body, to save weight.

1970 Porsche 917 LH "the Hippie"

It competed at Le Mans in 1970, where it took second behind the red 917 short-tail.

Porsche 918 Spyder Nurburgring Record Car

Great post! Thank you for the education. I had a question about this sentence above however because everyone keeps saying this. At Nordschleife lap records - FastestLaps.com it shows the 918 as having the third fastest lap. The Radicals (from my research) are productiion sports cars that are legal road cars so what am I missing?

Actually, Porsche just posted on their facebook page the symbolism with their three cars. It's a past, present, future theme.

Red 919 - Past. A tribute to the 917 number 23 car which won Le Mans.
Black 919 - Present. A tribute to the 918
White 919 - Future. A tribute to the future sports car. Their picture on thier FB page shows it under a cover. It's probably the 960 (Ferrari fighter)

prefix all with a 9, and you have the past, present and future.
Interesting how they got these numbers for WEC LMP1s for some time now.

Actually you are pretty smart to figure that out! Nice find.

I think because in 2005 and 2009 when these laps were done, those cars might be street legal "someplace" but not in most places making them asterisk worthy, kind of like Roger Maris.

Why is the Radical SR8 not road legal in the US, and therefor not counted as the Nürburgring record holder? : cars

The newest Radical SR8 IS street legal in the US, but I don't think those two were.

The 2014 Radical RXC Hits US Shores with Ford Mustang, F150 Powerplants - Torque News
Radical RXC Now Street-Legal in the US

Ford engines. $6,000 for an engine rebuild after 30 hours. $200. A reasonable car for a track guy.

Sounds like an AC Cobra. Stick a Ford engine in a lightweight UK body and build a monster.
