Question regarding the 981 Base exhaust pipe;

I bought a pre-owned Boxster 981 base 8 months ago from a CPO. Its an end 2012 build date.

I've noticed my base tail pipe rusting/tarnishing. I thought this would be normal seeing its a daily driver and the English weather.

Took the car into the CPO regarding a different issue (A/C problem), and when looking at the other base 981s in the showroom and on the lot, I noticed all the exhaust pipes are flush with the back of the car. This is different than mine as it sticks out over an inch from the back.

I brought this up with the mechanic and after a while he just came back and said it was normal for some 981s to have this (he didn't sound very convinced).
Was wondering if this was resulting in my tail pipe rusting quicker or possibly something like an aftermarket exhaust that I wasn't told about.

Does anybody have their tail pipe sticking out? Possibly could be because my 981 were one of the first to be built?

Appreciate any help. Thank You. :eek: (Apologies if this thread is in the wrong section)

Hi
I had my base Cayman fitted with the sports tailpipe at the factory. It does stick out a little but definitely no rust. I may be tempted to check the main system and see if it is original and possibly change the tailpipe if it bothers you?

How does one "check the main system"? And how much did the sports tailpipe fitting cost you?

Thanks.

If you look on eBay - Genuine Porsche 981 exhaust- you will see the genuine article. There are also some tailpipes there to buy. If you search the forum there is some information regarding replacing the tail pipes as I think both sides of the system have to be loosened-probably best left to a Porsche specialist? Mine was about £350 extra at the factory when the car was built. Good luck.

Your tail pipe is actually stainless steel, but it's brushed and not chrome plated. You can make it look great again by cleaning it and using a stainless polish or something like Never Dull. Yours is tarnished and has exhaust soot on it. I polish mine every 2 months or so. You could also paint it black with a high temp paint like Rusteum high temp. All the newer models GT4 etc are black.

My base Boxster was built in late October, 2012 and I never really noticed the exhaust pipe. Upon inspection, I found that it is well tucked in, extending no more than 1/4" beyond the bumper surround and still has the OEM black coating with no rust, so perhaps keeping he car garaged has helped.

Hello Fung88,

We have had many customers complain about the quality and design of the factory exhaust tips on the 981. We took this to heart and created Deluxe Bolt On Tips for the Boxster/Cayman community in a Polished Chrome, Black Chrome, and Carbon Fiber finish that will bolt up to the factory muffler system. Installation at our facility typically takes 1 hour, and the fitment is perfect.
