Trying to make up my mind on exhaust upgrades. I have heard a ton of audio clips and read lots of posts. My old 987 had PSE and I loved it but I also like the sound of the FVD. Aside from the obvious on/off switch for the PSE has anyone actually heard live or driven both of these? I live in a super rural area so it's hard to locate both of these to listen to in person all I have are youtube clips. Car is laid up for the winter but I want to do this upgrade 1st thing in the spring. Subjective question I know just looking for help deciding but I am sure I'll like either one. Thanks!

You can find most aftermarket exhaust youtube videos and have an idea what they sound like but can't really tell how loud they really are. When I took my 981 in for service, my SA said, the only option I'm missing on my 981 is PSE. He said, it'll be $2,500 plus to get it and it's half price for aftermarket and sounds the same.

Go with fvd. Best sound IMO and it increase performances.

I have it and no regret! And you can trust fvd, they are in motorsports!

There is also the poor-man's exhaust cheat that I first did on my 987 Cayman and just did tonight on my 981. 100% OEM and 100% reversible in about 5 minutes of effort. Not the most sophisticated sound....but definitely louder. Much fun at zero cost.

If I were to get an aftermarket exhaust ... it's gotta be Capristo for the 987.

I'm not sure if Capristo makes one for the 981 cars. Other aftermarket ones for 981 are just so so in my opinion.

They do, what's so great about it?

PAJeff, I know that it was 7 years ago, but at the end what was your choice ? PSE or FVD ? I'm asking because I'm exactly into the same dilemma.

I just swapped out my PSE for the FVD full valved exhaust (quiet version).

The FVD is top-notch quality (mind you it cost more than my first new car). Power and sound are fantastic, but this weekend I’m applying dynamat over all the engine areas to see if I can get the peak sound levels below 100 dbA (right now I’m registering between 105 and 108).

Unfortunately I live in a slow speed area and my commute doesn’t get above 50km/hr, and so it is difficult to avoid the drone RPM range. If you plan to do lots of highway driving or lots of track days get the FVD. It is amazing. But if you have to live around 2k RPM you get about 25% more drone than the PSE and it seems like it is about 15% louder drone.

I’m happy to help in any way I can, so let me know if you have any questions. If you live in the PNW area maybe we could arrange a drive. I’ll let you know what happens after the Dynamat.

If this helps you, I have a 981S Boxster 6M and I also went with FVD "Quiet" Version (they call it TUV). I'm very happy with it. Under 3,000 rpms its about same loudness as OEM but lower and deeper, above 3,000 it comes alive and gets louder and more aggressive. I don't experience drone, I have a manual and I never live at 2,000 rpms. I've heard with the PDK you can get some drone at lower rpms. I'm very satisfied and I get lots of compliments. My independent mechanic who installed it even complimented me on the quality of the construction. He was surprised how well it was made. Good luck, you can't go wrong either way.
