Hi all, been a little quiet on this forum as of late (just enjoying the car).

Long story ahead - the Cayman S has been with me for about 4 years now, and hasn't given a single issue for the past 4 years.
About a month ago, I had a really minor accident (at about 10km/h). No internal damage, slight cracking in paint - but nothing exceptional at all.

I had my front bumper resprayed at my local workshop, and 1 day later this error pops up.

  • The steering was very heavy and almost impossible to drive at low speeds (I'm guessing basically had zero power steering).
  • My car was in the workshop for about 5 days as they tried to diagnose the problem (tried everything from reconditioning battery, doing a hard reset, removing the steering rack and checking all the cables).
  • They also ran the Porsche OBD and found that the steering rack just wasn't responding (picture below)

After 5 days, I took my car home as I was tired of leaving it there, and the error... magically disappeared. I unplugged my car camera, reconditioned my car battery and my car ran well for a good two weeks.

  • I was really happy with it and thought the issue had disappeared but it popped out again 2 weeks later.
  • I then brought it in to a different workshop (Porsche specialist), and they said that although uncommon, they have seen this issue before and the steering rack motor had basically failed. I would need a new steering rack.
  • I've ordered a new Steering Rack + Control Unit from Suncoastauto and it should be with me in another week or so, will have the workshop replace it and I'm really hoping this will solve the issue.
  • These are the parts I ordered:

Part No: 3

Just wondering if anyone else in the forums have faced something similar?

The fact that it comes and goes sounds more like a wiring issue to me. But I am not an expert. With electronic power steering, I would assume that when the system detects an "issue" it shuts down the power steering pump which would explain the very heavy steering. Can they bench test the motor after they remove it (and before you install a potentially also good part)?

I've been thinking about doing a rack swap (or just motor swap) with the 718 rack, just because I've heard it has better feel for an electric assisted rack than the 981.

But I actually don't know if that's a hardware or software difference so I've held off.

I too thought it might be a wiring issue after seeing similar issues listed on this forum. But apparently they removed everything and checked all the wiring and I had both workshops tell me that I needed a new rack. They've also given me the liberty of ordering the rack myself online, and having them install it. I do hope this solves the issue as my car has been parked away for almost a month now and I miss driving it!

I didn't know this was possible. If you do go ahead please share more!
