Bumping this thread, where's the next video brothers? Is that basket of parts an engine yet? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ha! Sorry for the long hiatus. Vision Motorsports has the case halves right now and is redoing the sleeves and prepping everything for boost. We are also ordering custom pistons and Carrillo rods from them. It’s a waiting game right now.

Also need to sell the 987 trans and source a 986 S trans to mount up to the M96. We did confirm that our existing Aasco Flywheel and Sachs clutch with work though, which is great news!

What engine do you have? I thought the M96 and M97 can share the same trans? Now I'm concerned about my 3.6L conversion.

Wow, I’m glad you just chimed in! It seems as though when I was comparing bellhousings and bolt patterns I accidentally looked at a 981 trans. I was doing all of this from pictures, as we don’t have the case halves, and I screwed up. I’m going to confirm, but it looks like you are correct!

I'm sure a quick call to Dwain will resolve the question. BTW, no update yet for my project. I need to bug Dwain some more. Getting my Soul exhaust put on tomorrow :)

For sure! The longer it takes the longer we have to save up for it though lol. Good stuff, can’t wait to see what you think!

Oh, on the trans front. I think your trans will be fine but you will need a more robust clutch. Dwain is recommending that for me as well.

Well, we got the case halves and custom turbo pistons back from Vision! The case halves and sleeves look great. The bore is 101mm, so with the stock stroke of 78mm it will be a 3.75 liter. I think we'll just call it a 3.8 haha.

We are still waiting on the rods and crank, but it's nice to have some parts in our hands. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated as we progress.

Awesome news guys.

Make sure you do your homework on the swap - you are going from a 3-chain engine w/ VarioCam+ and 7.8 DME to a 5-chain engine without VarioCam+. Not sure what the DME version is for that engine. Also, you may need to modify your harness to work with the 3.4L.

Your Cayman M97 intake manifold will not work with the 3.4 engine. Get either a standard 996 intake or a 996 X51 aluminum intake. You should be able to reuse your plenum and throttle body - still 74mm?

Oh, and ask Dwain to send you the larger oil cooler and maybe Motorsport AOS.

We will be running full standalone engine management and doing away with the factory DME/Harness.

The X51 intake is an interesting option, given that there is no plastic. My only concern is if it fits the Cayman with dropping the engine down, which we would prefer not to do.

The center radiator and oil mods will most definitely be a part of this build.

I would plan on dropping the engine 1/2" to 3/4" by adding spacers to the engine mount and trans mounts. When mine went in the front edge of the intake was making contact with my body. The X-51 manifold helps with that as it has a smaller profile up top similar to the plastic intake off the Cayman.

If this is a track car, look to get the semi-solid engine and trans mounts as well. For road cars, just get the semi-solid trans mounts.

Ironically, seating those clips is about the only part of this build I would have supreme confidence in doing. Nice component selection, car should be a beast.

Thanks! I do feel like we have some of the best possible components. Just need to make sure we take our time and reach out for help wherever needed. If we do that and don’t screw anything up too bad it should be an animal!

I know this thread is old, but HECK YES man. I find it really sorry that it's like a taboo to simply rebuild an engine from one of these cars on your own. Is this America or what?
I know nobody can do an align bore, hot tank, or cylinder bore, in their garage at home, but at least we could be able to do new bearings, replace bent rods, cam followers, etc.
I'm new to Porsche and used to Chevy V-8's, and I love the feel of the 986/987's I test drove, but the disposable nature of the engine is what has me on the fence about getting one of these cars. "Oh no, you spun a bearing? New engine. $10,000. You broke a ring? New engine. $10,000. You bent a rod? Same diagnosis." Is there any problem that can happen to any engine internal part that doesn't cost you $10,000?

What was the final result of the build???
