Hello Planet-9!

After years of flirting with the brand, earlier this week I signed a purchase agreement on a 2012 Cayman R in Carrara White. Should have it in the next couple of weeks (it's half way across the country). I am beyond s-t-o-k-e-d to get this thing!

I was cross shopping Lotus Evora 400s, 410s, GTs, etc. -- MY 2017 and newer for those familiar with the Evora. After losing out on 3 cars due to unscrupulous sellers (long story with boring details for anyone but me), I made the [hopefully wise] decision to come back to my original mid-engine platform of lust: the 987.2.

I have a 10-year owned BMW E46 M3 and am an active member in the BMW community. I can't wait to get involved with this community, learn, listen, participate and hopefully give back. I'm not sure if build journals are a thing here (still exploring all the forums and sub-forums), but this time last year my car was a couple of days away from getting a full respray to Porsche Shark Blue. Sacrilege to some that I resprayed a BMW in a Porsche color, but the color looks striking on the clean lines of an E46 chassis M3.

I've lurked on this forum for a bit as a non-owner, learning about maintenance, DIY's, ownership experiences and general impressions of the 987, 981 and 718 platform. This forum has a wealth of knowledge and I hope to absorb some of it. The members here seems to be genuinely respectful and willing to help others out. That's a hard thing to do in forums so I commend those who volunteer their time to keep this place what it is. It also speaks volumes about the people who frequent these here parts.

That's it for now, already have gone longer than I thought I would and not sure how many people read the intros section anyway, but felt posting here was a right of passage.

Welcome to P9, @Casa de Mesa! First of all, what a thoughtful introduction and you've absolutely come to the right place -- especially if you'd like to be involved. Way cool. Obviously you've thought about about the Cayman R for a while, and I think your decision to join the P-car world as coming the BMW community -- you're going to find a great fit. The Cayman R is an awesome car, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

FWIW, I'm about 10 years ahead of you per my own shift; I've driven my '92 E30 convertible for 25 years...and have owned two BMW motorcycles. If it wasn't for the generosity of a dear friend, I would have never understood the joy of the 987/981 platforms (let alone the Porsche world). I slowly went down the rabbit hole, and realized that P-cars (especially the 98X platform) are beloved by hard core drivers who are all about the drive. You'll find that many of us here are thankfully not full of animosity towards different marques and their drivers; there's a lot of cross pollination that goes on. So if you're an E46 M3 guy, we speak your language. ;)

Having been lucky enough to move from a 987.1S to a 987.2 base, it is indeed all about the engine. Porsche got it right and I can sleep well at night knowing how solid it is (255K miles as of this writing).

I'm definitely going to stay tuned to hear about your adventures -- which have already begun. Again, welcome and get ready to post some photos!

Wow, what a warm welcome! I definitely came to the right place. 😁

Thank you @Boristhespyder I will definitely go on the hunt for those. When the Cayman R was released, I had just bought my 2003 E46 M3 and almost sold it to go buy the R. Funny I got there eventually, some 10+ years later, but still have the M3.

@foodbiker Thank you kindly! The E30 chassis is spectacular. I don't think people have a full appreciation for how good that sedan-based chassis is. So. Dang. Good. I've had the pleasure of racing a friend's Spec E30 car a couple of times and the car is sooooo good. Happy to see I'm about to slide down the slippery slope of P-car ownership!

@Platinum5150 Let's see if this works. First pics upload attempt! Here's a few, pretty much did windows & engine out, nuts and bolt restoration of it (75k miles on it) last year.

My 2002 M3 Convertible was Imola Red - and proved to me that red attracts cops. No tickets, but several warnings (they pull me over expecting to see some young dude driving, and find me instead.. HA!) Great looking M3... and Welcome to Planet-9, the Friendly Porsche Forum!

We're anxiously awaiting the photos of your new Porsche - and you might be surprised - this section on member intros is one of the most popular sections of the forum. People here all appreciate photos of great cars and the stories of enthusiasts who own them.

All - thank you much for the warm welcome, already loving this place.

beautiful car. I’ve had 4 E46’s. 3 were performance package (ZHP).

My friend/neighbor just sold his E46 vert and replaced it with an E46 M3 vert.

Shawn in VA (USA)
Thank you :)

The ZHPs hit a really nice sweet spot for the E46 chassis. Supremely flickable, fast enough, a ton of fun. They remind me of the E36 M3 (I had a 97 at one point) which in some regards, is more fun than the E46 M3, IMHO.

Wow - tremendous.

In the pics, it looks just a shade darker than Laguna Seca.
Yeah Laguna Seca Blue (LSB) is one of my favorites. I almost resprayed it in that color. LSB has more green in it. Shark Blue (aka, VW Cornflower Blue) is just a pure blue. The car had to be sprayed white first to get the super-poppy blue that is Shark Blue. In person, it looks much different than LSB.

I actually wanted an LSB car when I first started looking for mine. At the time, I couldn't justify the $4-6k LSB tax. Yes, I'm an idiot.

Imola - such an iconic color for that car.

I have fantastic pictures of it from the selling dealer in WI. I'm a bit superstitious in that I don't want to post any pics until the car is in my driveway. I'm also not sure if the previous owner is a member here or not so until it's officially, officially mine, I'll hold off posting any identifying info. I promise I'll deliver on this front once it's in my garage!

Thanks again all. I spent way too much time yesterday browsing this site reading, learning, jotting down questions, answering many of them and just generally enjoying the hell out of the prospect of new P car ownership! So glad I'm here.

Welcome to the Forum, Casa! Enjoyed "meeting" you in the motor oil thread you started. Just another vote for the great Planet 9 community I've been privileged to be part of for the past few months. I too am a former BMW owner -- mine was a 2007 Z4 3.0Si -- that I loved immensely, but after owning it for about nine months, I gave in to my curiosity about the whole flat-six, mid-engine thing. Sold the Bimmer after finding an excellent, low-mileage 2009 Cayman in Kansas last September, and haven't looked back. I can't imagine being any happier with a car than I am with this one. I'm a very late entrant into the sports car world -- the Z4 was my first -- so I don't have the years of experience before coming to Porsche that most of these other guys do. But at 66, I have to catch up in a hurry! :)

@Moon902 , @delbi thank you for the welcome and kind words. Let's hope the new Cayman is as nice as I'm making it out to be in my head!

@porschall yeah likewise, great digital intro!

Oh man, 1) the Z4 must have been a hoot. 2) welcome to the sports car addiction! I'm a firm believer in the experience. That is, what the car makes you feel and how it goes about its business of making you feel something. For cars like these, it's the sounds, inputs, road feel, the chassis dynamics and even the imperfections/quirks is what does it for me. The Cayman certainly ticks a lot of boxes! Can't flippin wait to get this thing!

Hey all. The Cayman is home!

It's a bit dirty as it sits, but it's nothing a bucket of soapy water and a hose can't fix. I'm absolutely thrilled to have this parked in the garage next to the M3!!

It's a 6sp manual setup for the spirited driving and the occasional track day. As I said earlier, this is primarily going to be a street car /canyon carver, but I might take it to the track. We'll see. A few mods that drew me to the car:
  • AP Racing Pro 5000R brake kit (355mm F / 340mm R)
  • Fabspeed valved exhaust and cold air intake
  • NR Auto Rear wing (I wasn't sure about this... but in person it just looks right, IMHO - it's the perfect size for an aftermarket wing and basically what the GT4s are coming with now.)
  • BRS splitter/air dam
  • Numeric Racing shifter
  • Elephant racing control & caster arms
The car has all original paint and is in exceptionally good condition. The interior looks brand new, the seats look and feel brand new. Whoever the prior owner was I give a lot of credit for their fanatical/meticulous attention to detail and maintenance. As far as I know, this car didn't see a ton of track time. But regardless, it's difficult to keep cars that see track time in as good of shape as this. If it weren't for the obvious track-focused mods, I would not have been able to tell it was ever used on track. It's in that good of shape.

I bought the car from a The Throttlestop in Elkhart Lake, WI. They were exceptional every step of the way. That's an A+ company right there for anyone who searches for them in the future. I bought the car sight unseen and it is as good of shape as they represented it. I also did not do a PPI (yeah... I know...) because of the many reviews I saw and the interactions I had with one of their owners, Tom. I will likely be a repeat customer.

I'm so stoked!! I'm washing it today, putting it up on jackstands, and will start looking it over with a fine toothed comb.

Here are some not-so-great quality cell phone shots:

The smudge under the brake light is just some debris on the surface. Like I said, needs a wash 🤠

It was worth the wait to see these photos of your R, Casa. What a machine! If I ever own one, I'll refer to my R in pirate voice every time -- Arrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Don't know if you plan a paint job on this one, but if not, here's a name idea for you that combines all the speed features with a nod to mountain roads moonshining heritage in your area -- White Lightning.
