When I had e85 z4 , the noise was due to the fuel pump.

I think I found the cause: I believe it's cross winds while also driving at speed. I've actually completely tuned it out now, especially since it doesn't appear to happen on non windy days.

I've never heard any noise from the roof on my 2013. (Tire noise would drown out such a low sound anyway.) I've actually been very impressed with just how quiet and well insulated this roof is.

The sound comes seems to come from right behind the driver's (possible passenger as well) so it doesn't have to be all that loud to be easily noticed. Our tires would have to be extremely loud to drown that out and even then I don't think the tire noise would drown it out. I don't think it's just a matter of wind though that could be a contributing factor. We've had the noise on even on days without wind. We get the noise cruising down street in some cases at 30-35.

Next time I hear it I'll try to pay attention to speeds and wind and stuff. May be a while though. Seriously... I nearly NEVER drive with the roof up. :D

takeshi, has it been fairly constant?

My '13 has exactly the same issue. I can hear the fabric crackle if i press against the inside of the rear top even when the car is stopped. However, the crackle goes away after 10 minutes of driving. Brought it into dealer, they said they took it apart and re-arranged some wires/cables within the top. Was quiet for a day then it all came back.... Has anyone figured out a permanent fix for this? I am almost tempted to take the top apart myself to see what's in between the inner and outer layer of the top..

Interesting. I'd completely forgotten about this issue until I saw your reply. I've driven a few times this year with the roof up and it's hasn't happened again.

Weird.

The static/sleet noise in my roof seems to have gone completely away after swapping out the stock PZero tires for Michelin Pilot Sport.

I've heard that major universities and laboratories are now using the Pirelli tires in NASER experiments (Noise Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Racket.)

I had this noise problem with my 2016 (it was intermittent). Took it to the dealer. Service manager went with me for a ride and heard the noise. Took the car in the shop for less than an hour, made some adjustments to the top mechanism and the problem was fixed. It was the top rubbing against the roll bar.

My roof was quiet for a few months after the dealer replaced the top. However, the same noise came back and is ever noisier than before. This seems to be temperature dependent, but I still cannot replicate it consistently. Sometimes it shows up after leaving it parked under the sun, but other times it's quiet. Not sure how can the roofliner fabric makes such a noise, so I suspect it might be the tension cable inside. I managed to take a video showing the noise by pressing against the roof from the inside just above driver's seat's roll hoop. It makes the same noise when I drive on anything less than perfectly paved..

I don't think it is just fabric but perhaps the hardware underneath. My noise sounded more like a rattle I think. Go to the dealer when it is making noise and show them. They can fix it. If you're in the Philly area go to Main Line Porsche.

I have noticed the exact same staticky noise from just behind my head in the roof from the inside. It's a 2014 and I've owned it a year but first time hearing it in the last couple weeks
It seems there’s no definitive answer on this one. A couple of observations having had this issue on 2 Boxsters now:
  • Sound travels in the cabin so pinpointing the location is difficult. Rollover hoops being in contact with the soft top headliner is what may be causing it.
  • Rollover hoops trim is prone to be the source of creaks and rattles which are easily cured by spraying a silicone lubricant between the front and rear pieces (some folk choose to remove the front piece for this). This is what did it for me, I think.
  • Failing the above, you could try getting your hand inside the soft top when it’s in half-open position to see what creaks and adding a bit of lubricant to that spot.
  • It doesn’t help that this noise seems to come and go with the change of temperature and humidity so not easy to diagnose
Good luck fixing it! Let us know how you get on with it.

Just an FYI - Porsche sells a CD called "Squeaks and rattles" - it has a sequence of tones that play through your audio system to "stimulate" any noisy points. It's quite amusing to put in when you have a passenger - tell them "here is Porsche music." There's even a short track called "Techno" (from memory) - which is some techno music missing all the frequencies above about 1Hz. It's mostly bass and drums. Very odd sounding.

Can't say if it's effective since my 987.2 is possibly one of the quietest cars I've ever owned. No squeaks, no rattles, amazing for a ragtop (and SO unlike BMW cabrio's I've owned in the past..)
