IS this possibly at all. I want to upgrade to a PCM 2.1 but it seems like all the pcms only come in Bose systems. Is it possibly to retrofit? let me know thanks.

You can use PCM 2.1 with any of the sound systems. I have even seen one in combination with the base sound system in the 2.7 (4 speakers, 2 of which actually make sound).
