Hi All,

Just got my '06 CS last weekend :) but haven't driven a manual in over 10 years! So I've been driving around my neighborhood after I put my 2 yr old daughter to bed, which is around 9pm, so I can get back into driving a sick and be comfortable with the Cayman's clutch-point.

There are two key points: 1) The CS I just bought has a Tubi exhaust. 2) I've been practicing my start-stop on a small hill in the neighborhood.

Well, a few neighbors actually drove up to me last night while I was driving to tell me to stop because the car was too loud that it woke up their kids! One of them even said he's been listening to me drive the car for weeks, when the truth is I've only been driving the car for 7 days. (Probably feels like weeks given how loud the Tubi is...)

Now, I actually don't like this particular aftermarket exhuast (can't stand the drone) and am waiting for the previous owner to get me the original stock exhaust. And I'm a family man myself. But to go out of your way at night to track me down is really something! The car certainly isn't as loud as the train that goes by every night! Some people just have nothing better to do than try to spoil our fun. :hilarious:

I can't wait until I'm good enough to stop practicing! :D

Honestly, if I had small kids...I would prob go out of my way as well assuming you are practicing for more than just a few mins. I have a neighbor that has a loud *** motorcycle and it can be pretty annoying when he goes by just a single time because it is crazy loud. I think it is the repeated noise that is getting to them...not if you just went by once or twice.

If you want to get good enough...jump in the deep end. I remember when I first learned to ride a bike I didn't stop until I got it...bloody knees, skinned elbows and all. Take it out on a rural road without a lot of traffic/houses and stay until you get it.

(Note - I have had loud cars and motorcycles so I am not against them...just mindful of the impact)

I'm definitely mindful as well since I have a little girl, too, and when she wakes up it's a pain to put her back to sleep, which is why I'm trying to stay away from the homes as much as possible.

Atop the hill where I practice has half-built homes they're currently constructing and non one is living in them. Looks like the noise is loud enought to get to the homes at the bottom of the hill!!! :p

I've actually gone out for an hour here and there, but this car is one of the easiest ones to stall that I've ever driven. :wall: And that's been confirmed by many people on this forum, too!

I'm pretty close to being comfortable with it, though. I think in a couple of days, I'll be taking the car to work (1 hour commute one-way) and then I'll probably get sick of driving it...NOT! :D

I like this story...

My neighbours got an F430 and the noise when he starts it up in the underground car park is outrageous. My PSE is nice but this is another level!

Constantly see the sideways looks from other neighbours who are fed up with the noise. IMO its the price you pay for living in an urban environment and it just happens the growl of an engine is music to my ears!!

Congratulations on the new Cayman! It will be two years for me this October and it only gets better. On another note, if you get rid of the Tubi, I'd love to buy it from you :).

g-money,
I used to live in an apartment complex with underground parking and even my Lexus sounded loud! :hilarious: I've always liked the sound of the Ferrari exhaust (throaty but clean) but it must sound like it's coming through a megaphone! I'm going to be a little more respectful and practice around the business complex 10 minutes away (which means more driving :D). Afterall, I don't want to give Porsche owners a bad rap ;).

thomashpsn,
When I first got it, the drone was unbearable but lately I'm getting used to it. Maybe I'm getting slightly deaf, hahaha! I haven't yet decided. Are you in the SoCal area?

Screw 'em. Have your fun. If they don't like it, the housing market could use some new buyers...

Congrats on the new car! I've had mine for about a week now. I'm still smilin'! :)

Flea,
Looks like we got our Caymans around the same time! Have you had a chance to Mod it or will you keep it stock?
I plan on doin' a few mods. Mine came with 17" wheels, and I'm plannin' on upgradin' them to 18" Forgestar F14's. That'll probably be first. Then it'll be time to start savin' for a SpeedART exhaust. I don't think I'll go crazy with the mods on this one. It's a base model, and I'd never see the money back out of it. One day I'll get me an S model. Until then, this car will bring miles of smiles.

My dad bought a new '09 base model. He's in Afghanistan right now, so I picked it up for him. It has 20 more horsepower than my '07, so I'm gonna have to do a little somethin' to be able to keep up with him. LOL

Those Forgestar F14 look amazing! :burnout: (The black or gun-metal one would look nice on my Guards Red Cayman, hehe, but alas I have no more disposable income) You'll have to post pics when you get them on!

Hahaha! True, true. But then what fun would it be if our cars were wisper quiet like the tons of Prius roaming the neighborhood?
Think of the scare you'd give them when you suddenly popped out of nowhere so stealthily. ;)Coming soon from PCNA, the quiet hybrid Cayman. Fortunately will likely have 450bhp.

I was once almost run over by a Lexus RX400h. It was on the side of the street and looked like it was parked. Just as I crossed the street, it started moving without making a sound!

There's no wonder that the National Federation of the Blind (yes) have protested against the quiet hybrids and are requesting they add some "noise." Here's an excerpt from an MSNBC article:

"The Association of International Auto Manufacturers Inc., a trade group, is also studying the problem, along with a committee established by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The groups are considering "the possibility of setting a minimum noise level standard for hybrid vehicles," said Mike Camissa, the safety director for the manufacturers' association."

Maybe I should send them an mp3 of my CS with the Tubi exhaust! That definitely gets attention! :burnout:

Just took the CS out for a spin tonight and found a small commercial hill between Target and Loews to practice my start-stop. That should keep both my neighbors and my feet happy!

Get a chainsaw and cut down a couple of trees next time you go out at night in the neighborhood. You know just to complete the whole inconsiderate butt head picture.:cheers:
